The City of Ankeny is seeking applicants for the fulltime position of Civil Engineer I which will report to the Development Engineering Manager within the Municipal Utilities Department. Ankeny is strategically located at the intersection of Interstates 35 and 80, between Des Moines and Ames. The full salary range is $60,300 - $80,923 with a starting range of $60,300 - $69,805 depending on experience, plus excellent benefits. Pre-employment drug screen and background check required. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Reviews the designs, plans, engineering reports, and cost estimates for private developer funded projects and for public infrastructure including street and utility improvements. Reviews the street paving, water mains, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, storm water detention, site grading and erosion control measures for compliance with City of Ankeny standards and codes.Performs construction administration and observation on private developer funded projects during the construction season.Reviews storm sewer televised video reports and coordinates any corrective actions with the related contractor.Reviews street lighting plans for proper street light placement and reviews franchise utility construction project permits to confirm use of existing or newly created easements on final plats.Conducts final inspections of public infrastructure on residential and commercial properties to assure compliance.Responds to inquiries and complaints from residents, businesses, and contractors regarding public infrastructure and private development improvements; completes on-site investigations, and acts as the City's representative.Advises the Municipal Utilities Engineering technicians when they complete construction administration inspection and testing of construction materials.Assists with traffic engineering studies including traffic counts, speed studies and accident research.Assists in the maintenance of records and plans for development engineering projects for sanitary sewers, storm sewers, streets, sidewalks, water systems, traffic control facilities, City benchmark elevations, and related development engineering projects.Assists with the work activities for the City's GIS database management, including data input, customizing, upgrading and mapping.Assists with completing special projects, studies and engineering reports including storm water routing, sanitary sewer and water capacity analysis, and pavement determinations.Assists with the preparation of the City's annual capital improvements program (CIP), including planning, coordinating with current and anticipated developments, developing improvement concepts, generating conceptual cost estimates, and formulating the five-year CIP document. Participates in the in-house engineering design and preparation of construction documents for capital improvement projects including plans, specifications, cost estimates and bidding documents.Attends work related meetings as needed or as directed, and assists with staff presentations when required. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS: Prefer two years work experience.Entry-level knowledge of modern principles and practices of public works, civil engineering, and utilities operations.Basic knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS).Ability to coordinate the activities of engineering technicians.Ability to manage multiple tasks.Ability to communicate and cooperate with officials, subordinates, contractors, and the general public. REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor of Science or higher degree in an ABET-accredited civil engineering program.Possession of an engineer intern certificate issued by the State of Iowa or equivalent from another state.Shall possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Iowa.
