Mechanic II $19.7383 - $22.1069 Per Hour DOE Full Time (40 Hours Per Week); FLSA Non-Exempt; Tenure & Benefit Eligible Vacancy #: 042-19, Closed By: 04/12/19 Actively supports and upholds the City's stated mission and values. Incumbent performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy motorized city equipment, including diesel.

Under direction of the Public Works Supervisor, employees of this class are expected to exercise independence in repair work on automobiles, trucks, snow removal equipment, light and heavy mechanized equipment and other similar equipment. An important aspect of this position is the responsibility for receiving information from drivers, diagnosing what is wrong, and determining what course of action is necessary to make repairs. May be assigned to work swing or overlap shifts during heavy times of vehicle repair and maintenance such as snow removal.

EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.Inspects, maintains, and repairs varied automotive and heavy equipment such as automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, sweepers, loaders, and snow removal equipment.Utilizing proper procedures, inspects, maintains, and repairs air conditioning systems R12 and 134A.Disassembles gasoline and diesel engines and performs major engine overhaul work.Inspects, maintain, and repairs hydraulic systems, air brake systems, fuel injection systems, and diagnostic on-board computer systems.Overhauls transmissions and differentials.Inspects and repairs hydraulic and air brake systems.Performs some arc and acetylene welding, as required.Performs preventative maintenance inspections and completes lubrication and oil changes.Installs auxiliary equipment, batteries, tires, wiring, door glass, door handles, hydraulic components, and brakes.Maintains accurate records of repairs made, work orders, and time worked.Works in the field and in the shop as assigned.Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, pumps, cylinders, and hydraulic controls, etc.Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of automotive and construction equipment.Knowledge of on-board computer diagnostics.Considerable knowledge of the principles of the operation of internal combustion engines.Ability to diagnose and repair hydraulic defects and air brake systems.Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment employed in all phases of repair and maintenance and gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.Ability to maintain accurate time and materials records.Ability to diagnose electronic and mechanical defects in a wide variety of automotive and diesel equipment.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.Ability to perform essential job functions relating to vertical transfer of parts or equipment weighing from 70 to 125 pounds.Ability to perform essential job functions relating to horizontal transfer of parts or equipment weighing from 60 to 100 pounds.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or G.E.D.Two years of specialized or technical training beyond high school.Four years of experience as a professional mechanic including two years as a diesel and heavy equipment mechanic.Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Trade school certificate relating to automotive mechanics and diesel mechanics.ASE Master Automotive/Master Truck Certification.EVT Certification and fire apparatus experience.Welding experience.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.Must possess a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Hazmat and Tanker endorsement within 3 months of employment.Must furnish own hand tools for this position.Incumbents of this position are subject to pre-employment drug screening, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug/alcohol screening.Must have the ability to be contacted and to respond in a timely manner, and be willing and available for emergency work, as assigned.Must be willing and able to work 12-hour shifts during snow removal operations, including weekends and holidays, as assigned.Must be willing and able to work Saturdays and/or swing shifts as assigned.Must be willing and able to perform field service necessary to keep equipment operative during inclement weather including excessive cold, wind, or precipitation.All Emergency Service Employees shall maintain their principal residence within the state boundaries of Arizona. All Emergency Service Employees, except those holding a position in Fire, will arrive at the assigned or emergency work location within one (1) hour from notification to report to duty.May be required to possess IMAC certification.
