JOB SUMMARY: In accordance with our mission and core values, the licensed physical therapist assistant will treat patients with neuro/musculoskeletal movement disorders and skin integrity problems, following the outlined treatment plan, utilizing knowledge, judgement and therapeutic skills to return the patient to the highest functional level possible. The PTA functions as a part of the multi disciplinary team treating the patient to meet established goals, following practice guidelines, regulatory standards and department procedures.


Education:Current Physical Therapist Assistant License in Arkansas

Experience:Three-month internship, which is part of Physical Therapy Assisting School program

Physical Requirements:This job requires, at various times, the following physical activities; climbing, balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, carrying, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing, sometimes exerting in excess of 20-100 pounds of force. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform daily activities. May be subject to inside environmental conditions, hazards (including electrical currents and exposure to high heat and chemicals), infectious diseases, and may be required to function around prisoners and mental patients.

Skills: Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course C. The PTA must possess demonstrated knowledge, training, and skills necessary and appropriate to the neonate, child, adolescent, adult and older adult. They must demonstrate communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to deal effectively with multi disciplinary team members, patients, patient's family members and physicians. Must possess effective decision making, and critical thinking skills.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Nursing staff, Ancillary staff, Rehabilitation team

Incumbent has access to restricted or confidential patient or other highly sensitive business information and must comply with the terms of SVHS/CHI Policies as they apply to their job role.

1. Evaluation/Assessment
Understands terminology and interpretation of the evaluation/assessment of the patient completed by the physical therapist.
Assesses the patient's general condition prior to each treatment session.
Understands the importance of physiologic and social information provided in the patient's record and its impact on treatment and expected outcomes.
Suggest re-evaluation of the patient by the therapist if their condition has changed significantly.
Ensures completion of Discharge Summary according to department and hospital policy.
Maintains patient progress notes according to department and hospital policy.

2. Maintains plan of care
Follows physical therapy treatment plan to support the established therapy and patient goals.
Documents the patient's response to the treatment plan and makes changes as appropriate.
Revises FIM Scores based on patient's response to treatment and progress.

3. Maintaining Patient Treatments
Obtains or verifies all physician orders for procedures/therapies.
Assures the presence of appropriate supplies/equipment to perform ordered procedure/therapies.
Performs or assist in therapeutic treatment or procedures according to protocol, standards and department policy.
Documents the patient's response to therapy through progress or lack of progress.
Monitors the patient care record for information on the patient's condition, discharge plan and other multi-disciplinary care givers notes that are pertinent to the ongoing physical therapy being provided.
Documents communication between patient, patient's family, and the multi disciplinary team to support the treatment plan.
Ensures effective and wise use of resources, monitoring for cost containment.

4. Teaching
Assesses the patient's and significant other's knowledge base, ability and readiness to learn based on their developmental age.
Identifies and utilizes multi disciplinary team members to provide comprehensive education for patient, self and others.
Incorporates teaching principles and methods appropriate to knowledge base, ability and readiness to learn and based on developmental age.
Demonstrates knowledge in area of teaching and available resources for patients, student interns and staff education.
Documents ongoing or completion of patient instruction/education in the patient record.
Documents student intern or staff education as per facility and department policy.
Evaluates the teaching process.

5. Leadership
Participates in peer review.
Provides learning opportunities and contributes to the orientation of team members, per diem personnel and students.
Serves as a clinical instructor and role model for new employees and students.
Utilizes conflict resolution to promote a cohesive team.
Utilizes supportive personnel in appropriate manner.
