TITLE OF POSITION: Senior Metallurgist LOCATION: Reading, PA OVERVIEW: Project based position working with a technical team, as well as other functions within Carpenter to deliver strategic goals. Examples include development of new processes and qualification for new facilities, improving existing processes for quality and business performance, lead or support quality investigations by customers, primes and/or regulatory bodies. Key functions include product performance monitoring, identification and recommendations for improvement opportunities, and reporting. PRIMARY DUTIES: Anticipating internal/external business and regulatory issues Recommending process/product improvements. Contributing to the development of the Carpenter metallurgical functional strategy. Leading project teams or sub-teams (for organization-wide projects) to achieve milestones and objectives. Participating in the development of the project strategy, in addition to project execution. Solving unique and complex problems that may have a broad impact on the business. Developing innovative services, technologies or products that address current and future customer problems or needs. Working within general functional, company and industry guidelines Developing business or technical rationale to obtain resources. Recognizing, communicating, measuring, and implementing actions to mitigate technical risk. Identifying and predicting future needs for alloy development. Identifying potential new products, processes and partners. REQUIREMENTS: Four-year college degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or related field. 10+ years' experience preferred in metallurgy with consistently strong performance. Expert knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices. Expert knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment. Knowledge of newest and latest technologies available. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to include verbal, written and listening skills. Ability to travel up 10 - 25% Abilities and/or experience across a broad range of areas and skills including: Effectively managing broad and/or complex projects and reliably delivering results on schedule Initiating programs and projects Applying SPC, Six-Sigma and BPI tools in the search for and elimination of project and/or manufacturing process inefficiencies Organizing and prioritizing tasks and making appropriate decisions Accessing mill and manufacturing areas Assisting others in the use of statistical methods and providing support to others for experimental design Providing training and education to key customers Providing support, leadership and guidance to peers, customers and managers related to key projects and opportunities Anticipating and responding in a timely manner to internal and external customer needs Making significant individual contributions to the attainment of team objectives Initiating, leading and participating on teams as appropriate Working with management to develop and implement strategic plans for the company Championing innovative new ideas PREFERRED: Experience managing costs/budgets for organization-wide projects or significant areas.
