Conversion and Hot-Working Metallurgist Location: Reading, PA PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Serving as a primary point of contact for the disposition of technical deviations relating to conversion and outsourced processing. Deviations include but are not limited to heat chemistries, physical attributes, and processing anomalies that do not conform to purchase specifications and/or standard procedures. Writing and revising conversion specifications and procedures. Serving as a liaison between SAO Reading and outside melt and/or process conversion sources. Reviewing and approving purchased heats. Creating new stock letters / special identifiers. Advising on best primary practices. Reviewing specifications and gathering/analyzing data to compare the performance of outside melt and/or process conversions locations with historical Reading SAO performance. Providing backup metallurgical coverage for all areas of Primary Metallurgy (Press, Rotary Forge, Rolling Mill, Billet Conditioning, Annealing). Conducting projects as assigned in Primary and/or Melting areas to facilitate process improvement, yield improvement, or cost reduction in Reading and at conversion locations. Assisting with integration efforts between Reading and outside production campuses (Latrobe, Athens, CPP, etc.) including coordination of IPC internal qualification projects as required. Other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: BS or MS degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science. 4+ years' related experience Working knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices. Working knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment. Ability to use statistical methods to do analysis and solve problems. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills-verbal, written and listening. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions. Ability to access mill and manufacturing areas. Ability to provide support and guidance to peers and manager in key projects and opportunities with minimal assistance. Ability to provide support and guidance to external customers in key projects and opportunities with moderate assistance. Ability to support and participate on team efforts. Ability to assist internal and external customers. Ability to lead small projects and direct work. Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills-written, verbal and listening. PREFERRED: Six-sigma training/experience is desired but not a requirement.
