Smart Metering Business Case Manager - Hybrid/WFH/Worthing, West Sussex
£50,000 plus excellent benefits, bonus and career opportunities/Worthing based with flexible hybrid working, usually 1 or 2 days per week in the office
Role snapshot: To assist in the building, running & growth of a new data programme capability within a huge Smart Metering initiative, affecting the environment, and the associated carbon and financial impact.
Possible backgrounds (official job title for the role is: Smart Metering Business Case and Benefits Delivery Manager):
- Utilities/Airlines/Energy/Telecoms/Fibre/Smart Technology/Building Controls/Systems Controls/Construction/Manufacturing/Operational Site Management (Hard Hat/Hard Services side)/Physical Asset Management/Retail/Logistics/Delivery Services (PO). NOT from a financial services environment (some FS is fine, but not throughout career).
The Benefits Delivery & Business Case Manager role:
- You will help the business to prepare/grow, a huge Smart Metering initiative, reporting into Smart Metering- Programme Capability Lead, you will develop, continually review and refine the programme business case that will guide their regulated investment plan and business case which spans their household and business customers.
- In this brand new role, the Smart Metering Benefits Delivery & Business Case Manager you will support the delivery and embedding of their Smart Metering Programme - a key strategic initiative that will help them and their customers to minimise the amount of water abstracted from the environment, and the associated carbon and financial impact.
- This is an exciting initiative that is vital to driving the customer engagement and operational changes required to reduce water consumption and leakage, as well as better engagement with their customers.
Responsibilities for the Benefits Delivery & Business Case Manager position:
- This role is integral in eliciting and documenting the smart meter delivery strategy and maintaining our investment appraisal options, taking responsibility for gathering, validating and maintaining business case assumptions, becoming the key point of contact for business and 3rd party inputs
- Conducting market research from similar industries to learn and explore business opportunities and challenges that will ultimately influence the Smart Business Case will be the key deliverables in this fresh opportunity.
- Develop engaging budget and benefits reporting, seek feedback from recipients and continually refine and own the single version of the truth when it comes to the Smart Business case, supporting wider finance and procurement activities, including regulator returns/submissions and price reviews as required.
Requirements for the Benefits Delivery & Business Case Manager position:
- You will need to be highly proficient in Excel and analytically minded.
- It is essential that you work dynamically across the smart metering programme and water networks to create and adapt business case scenarios.
- The role will work with stakeholders and programme team to ensure the actions and ways of working are aligned to the business case to ensure benefits are fully delivered throughout the lifetime of the programme.
The Programme Mission (this is a brand new team and programme), for the Benefits Delivery & Business Case Manager position:
- To collect thousands of pieces of data - on meters outside a customers property - they collect this every 6 months, which picks up a read which is used to work out customers charges.
- A capability needs to be built that can collate data by the billions, remotely via a communications network to pick up hourly reads twice per day from each meter, and with that data they can then use it to understand the patterns of consumption and determine if there are any leaks within the property.
- They will apply Machine Learning/ML to the data and then build activity from the data, eg; if the data shows there has been a low flow of water usage between 2-4 am, Machine Learning will distinguish that this is a continuous leak, this will then be monitored over 7 days, see if this is still happening, process will then be triggered where the customer will be notified by email/letter to advise we've noticed that there may be leak within their property.
Additional Notes for the Benefits Delivery & Business Case Manager position:
- Extremely numerate.
- Excellent skills on Excel and PowerPoint.
- The BC has to be iterated and will change and we find out new information and there will be new costs coming in as we learn more
- Prepare/Own/Submit the Business Case.
- Good at modelling - being able to think - what if we did x', what will that do, if we can't do x' how does that change things so experience with working with modelling data in that way.
- Once business case up and running, making sure that they are delivering these benefit - Benefits delivery piece.
- It is a process of this is what we need to do and why - then are we doing it? And making sure we are doing it to deliver the benefits.
- Would potentially suit an ex-consultant/Analyst (Not a BA).
- Analytically minded.
- Business case skills a must.
- Benefits delivery management skills can evolve over the years.
