Accountant (Tax)

Full time, Perm

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced Accountant (specialising in Tax) to join the tax team at our Higher Education clients institution based in Yorkshire.

Essential Criteria:

VAT

  • Preparing and submitting the University's UK quarterly VAT returns, utilising SAP and related reporting tools, MTD software and Microsoft Excel;
  • Ensuring the integrity of data included in the VAT returns by implementing and managing appropriate review processes and using analytical methods to identify variances and areas of risk;
  • Providing support to the VAT Manager in the preparation of the Partial Exemption and Capital Goods Scheme adjustments;
  • Working with the Central Purchasing team to advise and assist with queries relating to Import VAT and duty and the required documentation on import and manage the University's Postponed Import VAT Account;
  • Working collaboratively with the VAT Manager and other professionals across the University to implement system and or process changes to reflect changes in VAT rates and legislation;
  • Supporting any VAT and other tax compliance audits.

Corporation Tax

  • Collating and analysing data required for the annual corporation tax return for the University, supported both internally and externally, including the interrogation of the finance system and query resolution;
  • Taking the lead in obtaining the required input from other University departments;
  • Assisting in University preparation for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for corporation tax;
  • Preparing the University's Country by Country (CbC) submission.

Overseas Tax

  • Preparing overseas tax returns and assisting local overseas tax advisors with information gathering as required, supported by external advice where necessary;
  • Completing and submitting overseas withholding tax forms such as W8 BENEs or certificates of residence

All Taxes

  • Managing the Tax Helpdesk ensuring that appropriate advice is given in a timely fashion and escalating queries where appropriate;
  • Maintaining and updating taxation guidance to staff, including the University's Intranet pages;
  • Assisting with other taxes as and when they are introduced and become applicable to the University;
  • Assisting in the review and improvement from a taxation perspective, of financial processes and procedures, ensuring that they are fully documented and to implement changes where required;
  • Supporting the University's strategy by providing technical tax support and delivering VAT and tax training to staff across the University;
  • Developing and maintaining professional links with external agencies (eg external tax advisors and HM Revenue and Customs);
  • Making an active contribution to relevant external groups (eg BUFDG tax network);
  • Maintaining technical tax expertise through continuous personal development and attend conferences and training as required.

Essential

  • An accounting qualification and practical tax experience within a complex business, a recognised professional tax qualification with a sound understanding of bookkeeping or qualified by relevant experience;
  • Current knowledge and expertise of relevant tax legislation;
  • A good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, PowerPoint and high level Excel skills including data manipulation and interrogation;
  • Experience using large ERP systems for analysis and reporting;
  • Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to explore, evaluate and interpret complex sets of information, draw conclusions, report and recommend potential solutions with practical courses of action taking into consideration the wider impact of these solutions;
  • Ability to interpret and convey complex, specialist information both verbally and in writing to a range of audiences, including those with a non-finance background, and liaise credibly and articulately with other professionals;
  • Ability to work on own initiative with minimal supervision as well as working collaboratively and leading other staff to give direction and to ensure project delivery;
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and establish networks with internal and external contacts, influencing others thinking and to negotiate in order to achieve the desired positive outcomes;
  • Experience of working in a busy working environment including the ability to establish priorities and manage conflicting workloads and deadlines;
  • Evidence of a commitment to excellence and continual improvement and development with a self-motivated, professional and pro-active approach to work.
