Sustainability Associate

Lewis Davey are seeking a Sustainability Associate to work within one of the UK's leading architectural and design practices with five offices and over 300 staff. The practice's Sustainability team provides consultancy services to a range of clients including private house builders, commercial developers, Registered Social Landlords, other architectural practices, and Government agencies. The work of the team includes providing sustainability and environmental consultancy services on design and construction projects as well as research projects. The services that the team provides includes analysis related to overheating, pedestrian wind and daylight & sunlight, developing strategies related to Net Zero, embodied carbon and circular economy.

They are expanding their team of environmental consultants and are currently seeking candidates for the above role who are experienced in developing energy strategies and undertaking pedestrian wind & daylight and sunlight impact analysis for residential, commercial and mixed-use projects. We are looking for applicants with a significant degree of experience of the above type of work and who have project leadership experience. Project involvement will range from large scale masterplans and residential developments through to mixed use urban developments and film studios. Experience in these types of new build and existing building projects is therefore key to the position.

Principal Duties

The broad scope of the role will be to:

• Undertake analysis and develop environmental strategies on architectural projects within the business and for external clients

• Assist the Partner with business development

• Preparation of fee proposals and bid responses

• Assist in the team's research and development activities

• Provide design advice and training to staff and clients

• Manage and support other team members

• Undertake reviews of technical analysis and reports prepared by other junior team members

Detail Duties

• Developing energy & environmental strategies on architectural projects to meet the client's brief, site conditions and statutory requirements

• This will include developing Net Zero strategies, energy and carbon performance, pedestrian wind and daylight & sunlight analysis

• Working knowledge or past experience of using relevant industry recognised environmental simulation software to undertake quantitative technical analysis (examples include: Elmhurst SAP, IES, EDSL TAS, MBS, SimScale etc.)

• Working knowledge or past experience of using at least one 3D modelling software (Revit, Autocad, Rhino)

• Providing early-stage strategic qualitative design advice and detailed evidence- based assessment reports for planning

• Advising client and consultant teams on planning policy and environmental standards relevant to particular projects

• Presenting the strategy proposals to clients, consultant team, stakeholders and statutory bodies

• Active participation in design team meetings and ability to work collaboratively with other members of the design team

• Liaising with existing clients to help maintain continuing relationship and promoting the team's services with prospective clients and colleagues

• Keeping up to date with industry developments

• Assisting with project programming, financial management, resources and invoicing

• Writing news articles and opinion pieces for publication in industry journals

• Preparation of design guidance and policy summary sheets for internal use and issue to clients

• Presenting at internal and external promotional events

Previous Experience

Ideally the candidate will have previously been employed by an architectural practice or a consultancy advising on architectural projects. Their educational background should include an environmental or sustainability associated post graduate or Masters qualification. The candidate should have knowledge of current planning policy including that of the Greater London Authority, as well as experience of developing environmental strategies on development projects. Experience of leading projects and liaising directly with clients is a requirement.
