Boardwalk Pipeline Partners is looking for a Regional Automation Leader for our Greenville, MS office or other locations within the assigned region. This position includes extensive travel within area of responsibility with overnight travel at times (approximately 60% travel).


In this role, you will develop and commission new control systems, in accordance with Boardwalk standards, policies and procedures and support field personnel with troubleshooting, training, modification and maintenance of existing control systems and electrical equipment. You will also develop, maintain and implement SCADA software and equipment for station and unit (PLC/HMI) level and perform maintenance on control systems and software as requested by the field and as deemed necessary to maintain a safe and efficient pipeline system.

*Participate in programs and initiatives designed to prevent injuries, accidents and property damage (S.H.A.P.E., near miss reporting, hazard ID, interventions, unsafe act identification, job plans, contractor orientation, site surveys/audits)

*Ensure that required training is kept current


*Make unit PLC and HMI program modifications due to changes in system requirements or equipment enhancements

*Make SCADA (station) PLC and HMI program modifications due to changes in system requirements or equipment enhancements

*Develop and commission control systems for new equipment installations including Turbine and Reciprocating Units, Generators, Automation Networks, and Station SCADA and Network Control Systems

*Provide advice and support to Field Operations personnel for troubleshooting of existing control and electrical equipment for all compressor units and station auxiliary units by identifying the problem, developing and recommending a plan of action to correct the problem, working with district personnel to resolve the problem

*Provide engineering information, data analysis and technical advice, investigating all variables for consideration of possible solutions as new and innovative controls solutions are considered or modifications are made to existing systems

*Provide technical advice to field operations as to how control systems can be most effectively used to meet station and system requirements

*Identify and recommend improvements to existing Control Systems processes based on changing needs of both *internal and external customers

*Develop budget cost estimates for software development, commissioning and start-up of control system recommendations

*Participate as a member of Controls Technical Group that reviews and maintains the Controls section of the Operations and Maintenance Manual, along with the Controls Work Instructions

*Review and provide recommendations relating to electrical inventory parts, develop training programs, and carry out other initiatives as requested

*Ensure control stations are Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) compliant (either conventional or Compliance Specialist approved alternatives)

*Ensure control equipment tests are performed and documented properly

*Conduct/assist investigations into control equipment failures/upsets including abnormal operating events and conditions

*Develop/implement corrective and preventative measures to increase automation systems reliability


*Ensure automation equipment is properly selected, designed, installed and commissioned

*Champion Automation projects as required to replace/repair automation and control equipment

*Manage all project approval, costs, forecasting, and completion responsibilities (Project Manager) as required

*Review equipment selection and station design for accuracy and completeness

*Conduct/assist initial project meeting to review scope, labor, timing, materials, and responsibilities

*Develop Scope of Work Agreements

*Manage internal/contractor installations

*Inspect periodically during construction

*Prepare, schedule and conduct/assist commissioning of automation & control equipment

Selection, Training, Qualification and Support for Station Instrument & Electrical (I&E) Personnel

*Ensure automation activities are performed by a qualified work force

*Identify candidates for open I&E positions

*Participate in the I&E candidate screening/selection process

*Provide input for I&E performance evaluation (IE: key opportunities, measures, skill assessment, work assignment)

*Provide support for I&E technicians as needed

*Identify I&E Technicians training needs and arrange/conduct/advise

*Provide training, evaluation, qualification for field I&E activities as requested or assigned


*Work with the Area Managers to establish and manage annual automation operation, maintenance and capital project budgets


*5 years of experience in the natural gas transmission business or related industry, with a good understanding of the Boardwalk Pipeline System, compressor station operations, ancillary equipment and control systems

*Technical knowledge of gas compression equipment

*Logical problem solving abilities, high degree of electrical and controls aptitude, good people skills, good oral and written communication

*Proficient in the use of computers (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and programming applications (Citect, RSLogix, etc) for programming Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI)

*Ability to work independently and communicate with remote team members and supervision

*Ability to travel 60% of the time

*Valid drivers' license and clean driving record

*High school diploma or equivalent


*>10 years' experience in maintaining/supporting PLC based control systems in a natural gas plant environment

*Experience specifying/installing control systems, end devices, and electrical equipment

*Experience managing projects

*Experience managing contractors

*Experience providing technical support locally and remotely

*Experience providing equipment commissioning services

*Associate's degree
