Reporting to: Head of Application

The Purpose of the Role

The lead developer will be responsible for managing the delivery, maintenance and support of our internal applications. As a team member in the nascent Digital & Branch Engineering function this role will help deliver new applications and service as we modernise our trading platforms making them vastly better for Postmasters and Customers.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Lead the development of fully functional, cloud-native applications and microservices
  • Collaborate with the full B&DE department to support the Agile delivery process
  • Lead and inspire a team of developers, acting as the interface between the development team, the senior management and the rest of the business
  • Design team structures, resource strategy and recruiting talented developers
  • Identify blockers and bottlenecks, manage resolution and escalate where needed
  • Responsible for developer performance and development, conducting regular 1-to-1's
  • Responsible for managing team workload, sprint planning and priorities
  • Own the development lifecycle
  • Partner with delivery leads and product owners to ensure deliverables are met
  • Ensure the best possible performance, quality, and responsiveness of the application
  • Produce and maintain clean, high-quality code that is testable, understandable and observable
  • Accelerate delivery by implementing and leveraging automation and pipeline tools
  • Continuously improve and refactor the codebase to find development efficiencies and performance gains
  • Implement and evangelise best-practice policies, code review processes, testing frameworks and POL house-style
  • Support, coach and mentor junior developers
  • Lead regular daily/weekly/sprint-based meetings and ceremonies.
  • Ensure accurate technical documentation is captured and approved
  • Plan and execute software releases
  • Support the entire application lifecycle (concept, design, test, release and support)
  • Ensure new and legacy applications meet quality standards
  • Maintain code quality, organisation, and automation stages
  • Identify technology approaches, products, platforms, applications and protocols
  • Highlight and manage risks, issues and bugs

Qualifications, Experience & Skills

  • 4+ years professional experience developing applications in a variety of languages and frameworks (e.g. JavaScript, Java, C#, HTML/CSS, Go, ReactNative)
  • Developer team leadership experience
  • Experience of full-stack software development principles, architecture and conventions
  • Experience of cloud-native micro-services and distributed systems (ideally AWS)
  • Strong understanding of data structures and architectures, using relational and/or non-relational database approaches
  • A strong understanding test-driven development and testing conventions
  • Experience of developing RESTful APIs
  • Experience of release processes and governance
  • Understanding of IT security/risk
  • Experience with workflow and code versioning tools, such as Jira and Git
  • BSc degree in Computer Science, relevant field or equivalent
