£18,870 per annum FTE Plus 31 Days' Holiday pro rata (including Bank Holidays) + Christmas Shutdown, Reasonable Travel Expenses Reimbursed

Devon in Sight is committed to providing accurate and impartial Information, Advice and Guidance to people who are blind or partially sighted, their family, friends and carers.

We have recently launched a new service which will increase the independence, wellbeing and choice of people with sight loss across much of Devon.

We are now seeking a Community Sight Loss Advisor to join us for a two year contract on a part time basis, working 21 hours per week.

The role is head office based but there will be a requirement to attend our Community Sight Loss Hubs across the county. The project is part funded by the BIG Lottery.

As our Community Sight Loss Adviser, you will take a lead role in developing and providing our Information, Advice and Guidance Service which aims to improve access to a range of holistic advice and support services for people with sight loss across the county.

Main Duties

Information, Advice and Guidance

- Respond to telephone and email enquiries through our Customer Helpline and through our website
- Develop and maintain our Information, Advice and Guidance Resources so they are accurate, up-to-date and formatted in an accessible way
- Support a team of Volunteers to provide reception cover and 'Skills for Seeing' training across the county
- Process incoming referrals and register client details on our CharityLog Database
- Send out 'Welcome Packs' and Information Resources where appropriate
- Provide general information to people about eye conditions and the services available to them locally, regionally and nationally
- Demonstrate a range low vision aids, daily living equipment and assistive technology solutions to help people who are blind or visually impaired to maintain their independence
- Provide 'Skills for Seeing' training in partnership with the Macular Society so you can teach people with central vision loss new skills to make better use of their remaining peripheral vision

Community Based Support

- Provide a programme of information, advice and guidance sessions at Devon in Sight Community Sight Loss Hubs across the county
- Liaise with the Community Support Workers to co-ordinate a programme of Sight Loss Hub speaker events and demonstration events

Low Vision Aids, Daily Living Equipment & Assistive Technology

- Liaise with manufactures and suppliers regarding developments in Low Vision Aids, Daily Living Equipment and Assistive Technology solutions for the charity
- Source Demonstration Equipment for our Head Office Consultation Room and Community Support Service Demonstration Kits
- Provide training to the Community Support Workers and volunteers so they can demonstrate new equipment effectively

Partnership Services

- Signpost and/or refer clients to the Health and Social Care Sector and Voluntary Sector for specialist support and training to help them adjust to sensory loss
- Encourage clients to access Eye Health and Sight Loss Services such as High Street Optometry, Hospital Eye Units and Low Vision Clinics
- Liaise closely with the Local Authority Sensory Team and other agencies as necessary
- Encourage Registration as Sight Impaired and Severely Sight Impaired


- Help the charity achieve a nationally recognised 'Helpline Accreditation'
- Maintain relevant records of clients and volunteers, maintain statistics and preparing regular returns where appropriate
- Ensure that the Chief Executive Officer is informed in a timely manner of any issues affecting the operational management of the Information, Advice and Guidance Service

About You

To be considered as a Community Sight Loss Advisor, you will need:

- Experience of providing information, advice and guidance
- Experience of managing a customer helpline
- Experience of updating and maintaining information resources
- Experience of supervising and working with volunteers
- Experience of scheduling an appointment-based system
- Experience of experience of providing one-to-one client support
- Experience of assessing client need and designing action plans.
- The ability to give presentations to a wide range of stakeholders.
- A solution focused approach to problem solving
- A demonstrable commitment to partnership working
- To be educated to GCSE level English and Maths (or equivalent)
