Role Purpose

Scottish Borders Council is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced assistant engineer to work primary within the Bridges Team, part of the newly formed Roads Service. The successful applicant will assist in the management of the road structure assets (bridges, culverts and walls) through the preparation of design and refurbishment works and through undertaking structural assessments and inspections. They will lead in the delivery of the schemes through procurement, construction and handover stages as well as assisting in the maintenance of the asset management systems.

The successful candidate will have a degree in Civil Engineering, or relevant discipline, or present evidence of comparable experience and training.

The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate suitable experience of road structures design and construction and have knowledge of the appropriate standards and guidance. They will also have:

  • the ability to deliver engineering construction projects through the design, procurement, construction and handover stages to agreed standards
  • the ability to carry out of inspections and condition assessments of road and bridge assets along with being able to appropriately collect data on site and import to the asset management system
  • the ability to assist with scheme identification, prioritisation, option appraisal and programming of road and bridge asset schemes based on a prioritised investment strategy.

Essential

Educated to degree level in Civil Engineering or relevant discipline or present evidence of comparable experience and training.

A current driving licence and use of a vehicle is an essential requirement of this post.
