The Pet Supplies Plus Human Resources department is seeking a dynamic and hands-on Payroll Manager ideally with UltiPro Payroll (now UKG Pro)  experience, who can manage the company payroll processing & tax, high-volume employee changes, and compliance including federal, state and local jurisdiction requirements.  The Payroll team processes payroll weekly and bi-weekly for approximately 4,600 employees in 240 store locations across 24 states, distribution center(s), and our headquarters. This team also processes employee and other data changes. This is a hybrid office/work-from-home role with 3 days/week in-office at our headquarters in Livonia, MI.



Responsibilities/Qualifications:

The Payroll Manager reports to the Director of HR Services which includes Recruiting, Onboarding, Payroll and Human Capital Management systems. 



 



The Payroll Manager key responsibilities include:



Serving as the subject matter expert and administrator for Payroll including applicable legal requirements and government reporting regulations. Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing publications, establishing personal network/participating in professional societies.



Overseeing and reviewing employee action/change process (job/pay, status, location, termination, mass changes) for accuracy and efficiency.



Managing, training, and developing a team of 2 Payroll Coordinators and an HR Coordinator.



Processing headquarters payroll group(s) and employee job changes and updates to stay abreast of current processes and system functionality while providing workload support.



Leading SOX compliance and auditing per pay group/period prior to finalizing weekly payrolls, as well as post-payroll and tax liabilities review, and reconciliation. Partnering with Finance on GL questions.



Maintaining employee confidence and protecting payroll operations by keeping information confidential.



Ensuring superior service to employees with payroll questions. Understanding employee/user pain points to recommend and support improvement and education.



Documenting internal payroll and employee change/data processes, training manuals, and controls. Review and partner with Director on implementing additional controls.



Leading quarterly tax set up process and checklist process.



Identifying and recommending process/system changes to optimize functionality and efficiency. Partner with HCM Analyst and Director to explore, prioritize and implement changes.



Managing and supporting employee payroll, onboarding and employee document filing system.



Leading payroll calendar activities, state and local minimum wage updates, and year-end processes including W-2 review & issuance, PTO plans, tax department requests, financial audit, EEO reporting, etc.



Partner on organizational projects impacting employee records and payroll.



Serving as back-up for key Benefits activities.



 



PAWsome Payroll Manager candidates will have:



Bachelor’s degree preferably in Finance/Accounting, Business, HR or related field, or equivalent work experience.



5+ years of relevant Payroll experience; 2+ years in supervisory/management capacity.



Experience/proficiency in multi-state location/tax environment (preferably PA, OH, NY, IN, KY, MD).



Advanced proficiency in MS Excel, including pivot tables, vlookups and formulas.



Strong analytical, problem solving, and time management skills.



Strong communication, listening and interpersonal skills.



Proven ability to consistently provide superior customer service and follow up.



Adaptability to change and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.



Certified Payroll Professional designation preferred.



Payroll experience with UltiPro/UKG Pro ideal.
