The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Litigation Fellow, for the Companion Animals and Equine Team. This position will be responsible for drafting briefs, legal pleadings, petitions and comment letters, and conducting legal and factual research relating to animal protection, specifically as it pertains to companion animals and horses.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Assisting in litigation of ongoing legal actions in federal and state courts and administrative agencies; including conducting legal and factual research, drafting complaints, briefs and other legal pleadings. In addition, assisting in drafting and review of federal and state legislative and regulatory policy;

  • Assisting in developing new legal actions, including new matters in federal and state courts and with administrative agencies and seeking out opportunities for HSUS to get involved in legal actions that promote and protect animal welfare;

  • Assisting in responding to program staff and management requesting legal research and advice for use in organizational advocacy on behalf of animals, including drafting and review of administrative comments and testimony before legislative and regulatory bodies, organizational reports, press releases and other official statements of the organization;

  • Assisting in drafting and reviewing legislative and regulatory policy on behalf of animals;

  • Reviewing developments in animal law to broaden knowledge base and expertise;

  • Interacting with other departmental staff to contribute to legal decision-making and strategy discussions for individual professional development.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree required;

  • Legal research experience required;

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong legal research skills;

  • Must have the ability to manage own projects and exercise independent professional judgment;

  • Litigation experience, particularly in animal law and/or administrative law is preferred;

  • Knowledge of animal law issues preferred.
