Are you a committed Youth Worker who enjoys creating positive relationships with young people? Can you run exciting and joyful activities with young people and create laughter and inclusion with ice breakers, games and challenges in each session? The "rec area" is the heart of the Youth Zone and you will be passionate about creating a fun, positive, inclusive and energic environment for all young people within the area.
Job Purpose:
To manage Future Youth Zone's open access recreational area, which is at the very centre of the Youth Zone and is where every young person spends time at some point during every visit! The role requires you to create a space that is warm, welcoming, active and full of life, laughter and activities. You will be responsible for creating a lively, dynamic, creative and fun-loving environment for all young people while also creating space for young people to explore and discuss some of the big issues of the day.
Context of the post:
Barking and Dagenham Youth Zone, named "Future" by local young people, will be the first Youth Zone in London opened by the national charity, OnSide, in Spring 2019. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join the delivery team pre-opening and play your part in history, shaping opportunities and Youth Work for London's young people.
Future, like all OnSide Youth Zones exists to give all young people, particularly those who are disadvantaged, somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to. Each Youth Zone is open 7 days a week, at weekends and during school holidays. The Youth Zone's purpose is to help young people grow to be happy, healthy and successful adults.
Future's state-of-the-art £6.5 million building on Parsloes Park, will provide young people with access to a range of activities, offering them the opportunity to try new things, meet new friends and gain support from friendly, warm and positive staff and volunteers. The facilities include a 3G pitch, a gym, sports hall, recreation area and dance, arts, music and media suites seven days a week, with state-of-the-art facilities equipped for a wide range of sporting, artistic, cultural and general recreational activities and targeted services. To access a Youth Zone young people aged 8 - 19 (or 25 with additional needs), simply pay 50p per visit and £5 per year membership.
Duties and Responsibilities - General

• Represent Future Youth Zone positively and effectively in all dealings with internal colleagues, and external partners
• Comply with all policies and procedures, with particular reference to safeguarding, codes of conduct health and safety and equality and diversity to ensure all activities are accessible
• Represent Future Youth Zone positively and effectively in all dealings with internal colleagues, and external partners
• To be alert to issues of safeguarding and child protection, ensuring the welfare and safety of Youth Zone members is promoted and safeguarded, and to report any child protection concerns to the designated Child Protection Officers using the safeguarding policies, procedures and practice (training to be provided)
• To assist with any promotional activities and visits that take place at the Youth Zone
• To actively promote the Youth Zone and positively contribute towards increasing Youth Zone membership
Duties and Responsibilities - Detailed
To manage the recreation area at Future Youth Zone including appropriate outdoor areas
• To work directly with children and young people to develop their social skills and build their confidence by delivering programmes of activities and services;
• To plan events, challenges and more for young people, ensuring a fresh and vibrant programme is in place every night.

• To have great energy to establish positive relationships with young people and the wider youth work team and visitors to the Youth Zone
• To respond to the needs of the young people through activities in the recreation area
• To support and motivate staff and volunteers working in the recreation area
• To work flexibly to ensure the needs of the members are met, including disadvantaged children and young people and those with disabilities or additional needs
• To be able to make ten games up using just a ball or piece of rope!
• To ensure the participation of young people in activities and that their ideas contribute fully in the delivery and evaluation of activities;
• To promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people at all times;
• To be an active member of the team and operate in line with the values and principles of Future Youth Zone.

Person Specification
Essential Experience: Youth Work delivery experience - Delivering targeted personal development programmes - Individual work with young people - Group work with young people - Session work providing fun and engaging activities and programmes to captivate young people's imagination and broaden horizons - Supporting young people who are disaffected, underachieving and / or have social / emotional barriers to participation - Working in a team and alongside volunteers - Strong commitment to the safeguarding of young people - Ability to develop good professional relationships with young people - Ability to coach, encourage and motivate - Ability to identify and challenge discrimination and discriminatory behaviour, taking appropriate action as necessary -
Desirable Experience: Working with challenging young people - Residential work with young people
Essential Qualifications: A relevant qualification in youth work or similar (Level 4) - GCSE or equivalent, literacy and numeracy
Essential Knowledge & Special Requirements: Ability to deliver activities within an equality framework - Knowledge of the issues affecting young people and an ability to work with challenging behaviour and complex needs - Knowledge of health and safety, diversity awareness and safeguarding best practice with young people - Excellent written and verbal communication skills - Advanced DBS clearance - Commitment to safeguarding
