Job Title: Medical Device Design Engineer Location: Long Eaton (to include working from home) Reporting: Reports to the Head of Engineering Key Working Relationships (Internal): Working alongside existing management at Smart Surgical Appliances Key Working Relationships (External): Working with external R&D vendors assigned to the development programme Overall Responsibility Company Overview Design, development and design management of the company's hardware associated with the companies visualisation technology platform for key-hole surgery Smart Surgical Appliances (SSA) is a start-up, UK Limited Surgical Device Company and is the sole owner of novel platform technologies designed to reduce costs, improve safety and outcomes and minimise risk in the exceedingly large but complex minimally invasive surgery markets. The Company is developing its first technology, a new visualisation platform for laparoscopic surgery. The vision of the Company is to be the market leader in the research, engineering, design, development, and marketing of advanced visualisation devices, which improve the standardisation, safety, and surgical outcomes of minimally invasive surgical procedures. Job Purpose The design engineer will be responsible for the design, development and design management of the companies hardware associated to its laparoscopic visualisation platform currently under development. The platform is at a stage (technology readiness level - TRL) where it requires design refinement to progress through preproduction and onto manufacture. The key responsibilities will include: • Work closely with management on the design development, planning and execution of the visualisation development programme. • Able to work independently on programme objectives. • Individual programme planning • Report writing for technical file compilation • Management of the design history file • Able to work, manage and coordinate programme objectives with external vendors • Contribute to role-specific R&D planning • Work with management on managing and developing intellectual property • Work with corporate partners, as determined by the executive management Candidate Specification Applicants must be EU nationals or have permanent leave to remain in the UK and should demonstrate that they possess the following attributes: Qualification/Knowledge Essential • Hold a first or upper class-second class honours degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, design engineering or industrial design • 2-3 years demonstrable experience in industry in the field of medical device design and development (D&D) or research and development (R&D) • Experience working within ISO13485 and preparing and managing documentation (i.e. Design History File, Risk Management ISO14971, Design and development procedures, Change control) • Creative and innovative in approaching technical challenges Desirable • A master's degree in design engineering or biomedical engineering • A basic level of knowledge of clinical engineering would be desirable Skills & Abilities • Excellent/advanced CAD/CAM skills (SolidWorks preferred) • Experience at design for manufacture (DFM - injection moulding, CNC, etc.) is desired • A basic understanding of electronics would be preferable, i.e. for CAD integration • Stress analysis skills are desirable (i.e. virtual testing - COSMOS works) • Excellent MS Office skills, notably MS Project and MS PowerPoint. • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise initiative and identify problems and suggest improved working methods • Excellent report writing skills. • Proven analysis and design skills. • Proven communication skills, in particular communicating technical information to nontechnical audiences. • Ability to prioritise tasks, work independently and work effectively to meet deadlines. • Ability to present technical information succinctly and persuasively in meetings. • Provide positive input into R&D strategy and planning meetings. • Ability to learn new skills quickly • Ability to work with minimum supervision • Must be a self-motivated and ambitious individual that also has the skill set to work effectively on a team • A passion and enthusiasm for design engineering and development of surgical technology. • Fluent in English Personal Profile • Personality: Self-driven, results-oriented with a positive outlook, and a clear focus on high quality. Able to get on with others and be a team-player in and thrive in a start-up environment. • Personal Situation: Must be mature and domestically secure. Able to spend one or two nights away without upsetting domestic situation. Able to commute reliably to office base. Able to work extended hours on occasions when required. Maybe striving financially but not desperate or in serious debt. Must have clean or near clean driving licence. • Management Ability: Though internal staff management is not initially part of the job, responsibility and opportunity could grow with the development of the business, for example, the prospect of recruiting and managing a small team of design engineers. Some people-management skills and leadership skills, experience and natural ability, will be useful.
