Annual Salary
  • To ensure that all aspects of the systems infrastructure are developed, managed, operated and supported efficiently, delivering a high quality, high availability service to meet the evolving needs of University's business, research and teaching needs.
  • To develop and optimise the IT systems services across the whole University.
  • To provide technical support and advice to the IT Service desk, Service delivery and applications teams, as well as the large and advanced user base within the University.
  • Working with the IS information security team to maintain and safeguard University data assets, by maintaining information security controls, disaster recovery and back-up procedures.

Planning and organising

System changes, upgrades and implementations are often complex in nature due to the multitude of interactions. The high impact of a failure on any given service requires these activities to be well planned and tested, to minimise the disruption to the University.


  • Daily monitoring tasks such as reading security reports, checking storage status, viewing e-mail alerts.
  • Prioritizing and working through specific operational and project tasks.
  • Working through 3rd line service tickets.


  • Planning priorities for operational and development work.
  • Liaising with other Infrastructure teams to ensure the delivery of shared goals.


  • Planning operational activities, e.g. Ensuring security updates applied to systems.
  • Planning system upgrades and ensuring they are implemented in consultation with customers.
  • Planning relating to project-based activities, which may run for several months.


  • Assessment of current in-use technologies and wider industry trends, with the view to identify future improvements or change.

Ad Hoc:

  • Planning for changes that need to be implemented as a matter of priority such as an important application update requested by schools or departments or in connection with an unplanned operational task that must be carried out requiring co-ordination with the user population.


  • Periodic replacement and upgrade of systems infrastructure is vital to ensure the University can provide the best computing platforms within a rapidly changing environment. Selection of new platforms need to consider a 4-year operating life considering future University developments as well as possible future changes in technology.
