Aerospace America is the flagship magazine of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the world's largest technical society dedicated to students and professionals in the aerospace field. The staff reporter will keep our members and internet audience on top of breaking news, from the first flights of transformational aircraft to the commercialization of space to developments in the exploding field of urban air mobility. The reporter will provide articles for the online and print magazine.

The successful candidate will have a strong desire to be the first to know things and will exhibit a knack for telling complex stories with flair, accuracy and mastery of journalistic ethics and principles. The reporter will join our small, dynamic staff at AIAA headquarters as we work to serve a membership of nearly 30,000 aerospace students and professionals, including the world's leading subject matter experts in a host of aerospace disciplines.

The reporter will cultivate the beat while working closely with the magazine's editor-in-chief and associate editor. The reporter will file a minimum of three stories per week for posting on the magazine's website. The reporter will report from AIAA's expert Forums and from other events, such as international air shows, as assigned.

Basic Purpose:

  • Research, report, and write news articles on tight deadlines for the Aerospace America print and web editions as assigned
  • Assist with ongoing administrative and production tasks as assigned

Accountability:

  • Cultivate expert sources to find news under the guidance of the Editor-in-Chief and/or Associate Editor; conduct interviews, and research for Aerospace America web and print editions as assigned
  • File news stories on deadline and according to AP and Aerospace America style.
  • Secure photos or other visual assets for news items to increase traffic to site and accompany print articles as assigned
  • Manage assigned beats, and corresponding channels.
  • Work with Editor-in-Chief to identify potential subjects for recurring sections, plan reporting schedules, conduct interviews and complete assigned stories
  • Assist with writing and editing of captions, sidebars, factoids, and other ancillary content as assigned
  • Ensure pieces are accurate and objective, written clearly and with a contemporary, real-world flare
  • Maintain notes in written or electronic form
  • Assist with quality control on all articles and visual elements of the magazine

Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports to Editor-in-Chief

Position Dimensions:

  • Produce original content as required and directed by Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editor
  • Work with Aerospace America staff, Communications staff, and other AIAA staff as appropriate
  • Communicate with authors, public relations groups, industry representatives, and other outside groups as necessary
  • Moderate domestic travel (approximately 3-5 trips per year) to AIAA or other industry events and possibly one international event per year. Attendance at local press conferences as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or other writing/communications required; scientific focus preferred
  • One to two (1-2) years writing experience for print or online publication, which may include college-level experience such as published campus or local community reporting.
  • Strong writing, verbal communication and analytic skills
  • Strong proofreading skills and excellent eye for detail
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize relevant breaking news and act promptly
  • Demonstrated ability to create and incorporate data-based, visual elements into regular reporting
  • Familiarity with technical and scientific language required, with a strong emphasis on engineering, aerospace and defense technology
  • Demonstrated ability to make technical material understandable to non-specialist audience
  • High degree of professional and journalistic ethics
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Experience with current online and social media tools [including but not limited to, Twitter, LinkedIn,] a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines

Other Qualifications:

  • Professional demeanor and comfort speaking with corporate executives, government and military leaders, and their communications/support staff both in person or by phone.
  • Forward-thinking and team-oriented attitude
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt to or learn new editing and publishing tools; prior experience with Adobe InCopy and InDesign a plus
