General Summary This position reports directly to the CEO and drives the strategic direction of the Drug Development business of Southern Research, providing the leadership to achieve annual goals and to plan for growth.. The division consists of two sites: Birmingham, AL and Frederick, MD. There are approximately 130 employees, with the majority being in Birmingham. Leaders reporting into this position include:. Senior Director, Infectious Disease. Director, Toxicology and Pathology Services. Director, Bioanalytical, Oncology and Project Management. Director of Operations (matrixed resource management and project management). Director, Business Development ( focused on commercial BD). Manager and Veterinary, Animal Care and Research. This business unit generates approximately $25 million in revenue each year and is poised for growth. The revenue is split approximately 50:50 between federal and commercial clients, and the commercial clients are split between North America, Europe and Asia. The unit has historic strength in infectious diseases, toxicology (particularly reproductive toxicology), pathology, oncology, and immunology, with supporting in-house bio-analytical capabilities. The work is heavily GLP focused.. This division is complemented by others at SR, including a drug discovery unit focused on advancing our proprietary drug pipeline.. Key Responsibilities. Develops and executes a multi-year strategic plan.. Drives financial and operational performance.. Directs functions and employees from multiple disciplines and sites.. Assures contact with clients at all levels regarding the status and progress of activities; meet customer commitments.. Drives external awareness of industry changes which affect the operation of the division and develop new technology offerings as required.. Serve as a corporate officer, participating in all major decisions and strategies.. Assure compliance with all regulatory requirements.. Position Specifications. Develop and implement the R&D, marketing, project development and operational goals; provide integration and coordination of R&D and sales activities.. Provide management oversight to the division research program consisting of multiple technologies and capabilities.. Provide administrative management for the division by approving capital and major operating expenditures consistent with operating plans; approve major proposals submitted by the division; allocate funding to sales, internal research and development, and other special purposes.. Provide management oversight to the implementation and operation of Quality Policy within the division.. Provide management oversight within the division to the implementation and operation of procedures and practices defined in the Health and Safety Manual.. Propose, develop, and implement changes in practices and procedures in order to deliver the highest quality research, products, and services to customers.. Manage staff assigned to the division by hiring, developing, appraising, and motivating division senior management and technical staff. Approve or delegate the approval of hires, terminations, disciplinary actions, promotions, and salary adjustments.. Perform public relations and civic activities.. As a corporate officer participate in all organizational decisions and growth.. Perform other duties as may be required by President and CEO.. Requirements/Minimum Qualifications. Significant experience in business management, including full P&L responsibility, in a customer oriented Contract Research Organization.. Strong financial acumen to ensure financial performance meets company objectives and budgets... Relevant degree, ideally a PhD in a relevant life sciences field.. Ideally, strong experience in one or more of the key technical areas. Twenty years of directly related experience with a successful record of professional achievement and leadership.. Significant experience and knowledge of regulatory requirements of the FDA and the CDC.. Leadership and managerial skills to effectively direct a group of highly professional individuals.. This position will have overall responsibility for Southern Research's Select Agent Program which may require entry into the BSL2/3. Individuals who will enter BSL-2/BSL-3 labs must: satisfactorily meet medical requirements; obtain required vaccinations; pass and maintain in depth security and background checks, including, but not limited to, clearance to handle select agents and/or use a gamma irradiator; wear required PPE.. This position will work in both an office and BSL-3 laboratory setting. Requires:. Ability to wear appropriate PPE when entering BSL-3 laboratory and meet medical surveillance requirements.
