Exhibit Interpretation Developer Primary Purpose The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking to hire a leader for our exhibit interpretation efforts. The Exhibit Interpretation Developer will manage and facilitate all aspects of exhibit interpretive planning with both internal and external project teams. This new position will report to the William Bernoudy Vice President, Architecture & Planning. Essential Job Functions * Manage and facilitate all aspects of exhibit interpretive planning with internal and external project teams. * Facilitate exhibit/interpretation evaluation and visitor studies via the Conservation and Audience Research and Evaluation Department. * Utilize the Zoo's Interpretation Master Plan for exhibit interpretation/content development. * Manage copy writing process and schedule for all exhibit materials including oversight of internal and management of external exhibit writers when necessary. Collaborate with appropriate departments including Animal Division, WildCare, Marketing/Creative Services, Education, Public Relations, and Conservation and Audience Research and Evaluation Department (CARE) to ensure an understanding of the exhibit concepts for information packages to strengthen the opportunities for communicating messages particularly pertaining to exhibits. * Facilitate the acquisition, development, and production of all multimedia components for exhibits including film, video, sound, and digital programs with in-house teams and/or outside consultants. * Oversee photo and media research for all exhibits and associated contracting, rights procurement and records management for all copyright materials. * Create, administer and manage project schedules, budgets, and priorities for implementation. * Work with appropriate departments to assist in providing fundraising proposals for exhibits. * Train staff, contractors, and partners in the goals and exhibit principles for all exhibition programs. * Evaluate all existing exhibit interpretation and facilitate re-design and maintenance. * Assist the Vice President of Architecture and Planning on special projects. Representative Duties * Help transform concepts into tangible ideas and compelling storylines that resonate with a project's target audiences. * Develop exhibit narrative by working closely with the project team, and other experts/advisors to identify stories within the exhibit, exhibit flow, and story narrative. * Conduct content research through primary and secondary sources, including creating outlines for label, media, and interactive scripts/outlines, facilitate searching for and tracking images, and library materials needed for project purposes. * Manage the writing, copyediting and comment process on exhibit label copy, media and interactive scripts, and other interpretive content. * Collaborate with project partners such as writers, media producers and interactive firms. Participate in the planning and implementation of audience testing and evaluation related to exhibits and other interpretive projects, as necessary. Qualifications and Skills * Bachelors' Degree or advanced degrees in related field preferred. * Experience managing work groups, assigning tasks, monitoring work and evaluating employee performance. * Experience in interpretive planning and content development for museums, zoos or aquaria. Demonstrated research and writing ability, including proposal writing, technical writing, and narrative writing. * Ability to understand and demonstrate how a story is achieved through visual tools, with a solid understanding of content development into visitor experiences. * Demonstrated excellence in project management, with the ability to interface and facilitate work flow between internal clients and vendors simultaneously. * Strong commitment to inter-departmental collaboration. Ability to work with creative and production teams and maximize output of talented people and work with others at all levels, adept multi-tasking, "thinking outside the box" to creatively problem solve. * Knowledge of material and 3-D interactives, state-of-the-art in exhibit design. Knowledge and experience using a variety of computer software, including Microsoft Office, the Adobe Creative Suite, and AutoCAD. Advanced knowledge of new communication media, media production and acquisition are desirable. * A robust set of professional and interpersonal skills, including excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, customer service skills, time management skills, and presentation skills. Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy. * A strong work ethic, including the self-initiative to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines, an excellent grasp of work flow and scheduling, the ability to work both independently and in teams, and the ability to work under pressure with flexibility. * Understanding of confidentiality and protocol and a strong alignment with Saint Louis Zoo core values. * Bachelors' Degree or advanced degrees in related field preferred. * Experience managing work groups, assigning tasks, monitoring work and evaluating employee performance. * Experience in interpretive planning and content development for museums, zoos or aquaria.
