Environmental Epigenomics: Impact of environmental toxicants on the epigenome and single-cell transcriptome of immune cells. A postdoctoral fellowship position is available for a candidate with training in genomics and molecular biology to investigate toxicant-induced (including smoking) changes in the epigenome and single-cell transciptome of the human immune system using scRNA-seq and CyToF. Environmental exposures that produce DNA damage, oxidative stress and inflammation dramatically alter the epigenome and transcriptome of immune cells. We are identifying highly significant, differentially methylated regions in gene enhancers and up-regulated gene expression in humans exposed to toxicants and aging. The postdoctoral fellow will carry out functional genomics studies to identify transcription factors involved, identify specific cell types affected by exposure and eludicate the biological importance of these altered genomic features.

The Environmental Epigenomics Group at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences-NIH works to characterize underlying factors that contribute to disease susceptibility. We are identifying epigenetic factors and DNA sequence variants that modulate exposure responses mediated by the transcription factors AHR, NRF2 (Cell Reports, 2016) and p53 (Cell 155:410, 2013, Nature Reviews Cancer 14:251, 2016). Characterizing the functional role of exposure-induced, differentially methylated regions has the long-range goal of identifying biomarkers of exposure and susceptibility to environmentally induced disease.

Job Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree in molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, toxicology, or related field. Experience with human genome databases, transcription factor binding motifs, epigenetics and transcriptomics would be helpful. Additional knowledge of bioinformatics is desirable. While candidates with up to five or fewer years or relevant postdoctoral research experience are eligible, recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Postdocs can take advantage of the excellent NIEHS research environment which offers outstanding resources, equipment, supplies, core facilities, and opportunities for training and development, including support for K99 proposals.
