The Royal Free Charity is rapidly expanding and a new opportunity has arisen for a Generalist Welfare Benefits Advisor.

The role will be responsible for providing a generalist welfare advice service to people (patients and carers) affected by long-term health conditions with the aims of increasing quality of life by:-

reducing the stress of navigating through the welfare benefits service
maximising their income
minimising their expenditure
advise on a range of related social welfare issues
signpost to other relevant services

The RFC works in partnership with the Royal Free Trust by 'making today feel better' for all users of the hospitals. We raise and spend millions every year, which supports pioneering research that revolutionises patient care through to everyday improvements in hospital services and facilities.

You will be able to undertake the following role responsibilities and demonstrate the following essentials, desirables and general experience and skills:-

Welfare casework


provide and manage a generalist complex welfare advise service for people affected by long-term health conditions and their carers
provide advocacy for clients as and where required
help clients to establish possible benefit entitlements, understand benefit decisions, make claims as appropriate, maximise income and minimise expenditure
negotiate with the statutory bodies and other relevant authorities i.e. local authorities, DWP, Pension Services on the clients' behalf
provide face to face appointments, drop in sessions, clinics, ward visits and outreach work
refer clients to other agencies or departments as appropriate
provide a high quality service that is personal, responsive and sensitive
ensure that people accessing the service feel welcomed, valued and understood

Working with others


participate in regular team meetings and build good working relationships with staff in other departments and organisations
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of external agencies and changes in legislation, policies and practices
promote the Support Hub by attending meetings and events, giving presentations and producing and distributing appropriate information materials

Case Management


maintain an:-

accurate and factual case record of each client to enable the continuity of casework, information retrieval, monitoring and evaluation
electronic diary for booking appointments and follow-up actions

deal with phone and email enquiries from clients and third parties
ensure that suitable confidentiality and data protection procedures are adhered to
prioritise and manage own workload and work effectively on own initiative

Fit for Royal Free Charity - What we are looking for

We can't live without….(essential):-

minimum 2 years post qualification experience in generalist welfare advice, casework and in managing own caseload
experience of the full range of debt and welfare benefits subjects, including in-depth and complex casework
Certificate in Generalists Advice Work or other equivalent qualification or Training i.e. NVQ Level 3 and / or 4 in Advice and Guidance Support
be flexible, tactful, diplomatic and supportive in your approach, whilst being able to adapt your approach for difference audiences
must have a clear understanding of, and commitment to, Equality and Diversity policies, and the ability to incorporate this into all aspects of the role
ability to:-

provide advice options and referrals for people affected by long term health conditions in relation to generalist welfare support including benefits, housing, employment and other aspects of social welfare law
develop relationships with health care professionals
prioritise, organise and manage workload effectively whilst dealing with unplanned interruptions
prepare clients for appeal tribunals including preparation submission
give and receive feedback objectively and sensitively and a willingness to challenge constructively
travel and work between the Charity several sites
follow instructions and adhere to Charity and Trust policies


Understand of legislation policy and practice
In-depth and up to date knowledge of welfare benefits and rights
report writing skills
IT skills, Microsoft Word and Excel to a high standard

an understanding of the issues faced by people affected by long-term health conditions
experience of working with volunteers
previous experience of working within an NHS environment
CMA level 3 Award in Generalist Debt Advice
