Job Description & Qualifications

Position Description

The Government & Policy Communications Manager is responsible for leading communications for Ford's public policy positions and managing reputation. This includes shaping the messaging around advocacy issues and interfacing with media, influencers and other stakeholders on those issues.

Major Responsibilities:

* Develop and lead the communications strategy for governmental affairs and policy-related issues in support of Ford's corporate strategy and objectives

* Communicate and advocate for Ford's position on policy issues, including:

* Trade

* Fuel economy/electrification

* Jobs/economy

* Manufacturing

* Safety

* Autonomous vehicles

* Privacy and cybersecurity

* Engage with external associations to advocate on behalf of the industry without tarnishing our brand. These associations may include:

* Auto Alliance

* AAPC

* National Association of Manufacturers

* U.S. Chamber of Commerce

* Business Roundtable

* Communicators in government (White House, federal agencies, Capitol Hill)

* Manage and/or coordinate development of policy and position statements based upon input from cross-functional teams, including testimony before government bodies

* Manage crises involving Ford's public policy positioning

* Engage with Government and third party communicators to hone and amplify our message

* Support Government Affairs executives based in Washington, D.C., as well as visiting executives

* Work closely with the rest of the global Communications team to flag potential political implications resulting from decisions elsewhere in the Company

* Manage and mentor agency staff

* Requires some travel (up to 10 percent)

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree is required

* 8+ years of experience with proven success in communications and media relations

* 6+ years of political or issue advocacy communications experience in a corporation, public relations firm, trade association, or government

Preferred Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, political science, or public affairs; advanced degree a plus

* Experience representing a complex, publicly held, global company strongly preferred

* Ability to work collaboratively with a cross-functional team, simplifying complex issues and demonstrating strong influencing and negotiation skills

* Exceptional written and oral communications skills; superior problem-solving and project management skills

* Confidence, composure necessary to interface effectively with senior-level executives, as well as external constituencies, media, special-interest groups and government officials

* Experience with reputation management, crisis management and issue-based communications

* A can-do attitude and a sense of urgency in an unpredictable and rapidly changing environment
