The Board of Directors of the Northfield Area Family YMCA is looking for a visionary leader who can build strong relationships with high visibility in the communities we serve. This energetic and entrepreneurial leader should exhibit an outgoing personality and an engaging manner with the aim of demonstrating the indispensable nature of our YMCA as a community asset. The YMCA seeks to be at the center of community life as a leading provider of youth programs, and health and wellness services.

Salary Range:$80k - $95k, Salary offer is commensurate with experience

Benefits: Retirement contribution 12% (7% paid by YMCA, 5% by employee), vacation plan, $6,500 stipend for health insurance, and other benefits per personnel policy

History: Guided by the YMCA of the USA, a group of Northfield community members joined together in the spring of 2005 to form the Northfield Area Family YMCA. Initially known as the "Y Northfield Committee," this enthusiastic group led a community-wide effort to launch the YMCA. Initially, this included offices and programs running in over twenty different locations around town, and a Health and Wellness Center in the Northfield Retirement Community. From 2005 to 2014, in addition to programming, the Northfield Area Family YMCA launched a feasibility study and ultimately a $9.4M capital campaign resulting in a new community facility which opened in 2014.

Facility Features: The 31,000 sq. ft. facility includes a large swimming pool with play areas, gymnasium with full basketball court, indoor walking track, group exercise room, fitness center with weights, child watch, gathering room, locker rooms (adult, youth, & family) and offices.

Staff: In addition to the CEO, there are currently 3 full-time, 80 part-time, and 30 seasonal staff.

Operating Budget Size: $1.3 million

Annual Campaign: The Northfield Area Family YMCA exceeded the annual campaign goal in 2017, and set a 2018 goal of $60,000. We expect future years to increase significantly as our capital campaign has recently been completed.

# of Board Members: The board consists of 14 community members in addition to 2 student representatives.


Our Community: Located 40 miles south of the Twin Cities area, Northfield is a scenic river town with 25,000 residents. "Colleges, cows and contentment" is the city byline. It is a vibrant community with a strong educational, commercial, industrial, and agricultural base. Division Street, Northfield's main street, is lined with locally-owned businesses, friendly coffee shops, and a variety of restaurants. Northfield was included on's "50 Most Beautiful Small Towns in America" list and recently named "Best Place to Retire" by Money Magazine. We also are host to the annual Defeat of Jesse James Days, one of Minnesota's largest all-volunteer events, as well as the annual Riverfront Fine Arts Festival.

Education: Often cited for its charm and livability, Northfield consistently ranks among the best college towns in the U.S. With Carleton College on the northern edge and St. Olaf College on the western edge, the combined staff and student population of the two institutions account for a large portion of the town's year-round population. Northfield Public School District operates three elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and an alternative learning center. In addition, Northfield has two public charter schools: Arcadia (grades 6-12) and Prairie Creek Community School (grades K-5) in nearby Castle Rock.

Medical Facilities: Northfield Hospital & Clinics is an independent, integrated healthcare organization providing a wide range of services to patients. More than 800 staff are employed through the hospital's primary and specialty-care clinics and rehabilitations centers. Allina Health Northfield also provides primary care and twelve specialty services at their large local clinic.

Outdoor Lifestyle: Parks, trails, the Carleton College Arboretum, the Cannon River Wilderness Park and gorgeous scenery abound in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". With four beautiful seasons, Northfield boasts an outdoor lifestyle of biking, hiking, skating, skiing, swimming, and running.

Sports and the Arts: Northfield offers strong local theater and arts programming, and in addition the two local colleges offer a variety of athletic events, music and theater productions. The Twin Cities are home to multiple professional sports teams such as the Minnesota Vikings, Twins, Saints, Lynx, Timberwolves, Wild, United FC, and RollerGirls. There are also world-class theater and musical events.

Shopping: In addition to local, unique shops in downtown Northfield, the Metro area of Minneapolis/St. Paul is an easy drive and features multiple shopping options such as the Mall of America, the largest mall in the U.S.

  • Accredited 4-year college degree (required).
  • Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization.
  • Fiscally sound business management approach and experience with fiscal management for a complex organization in excess of $1M annually.
  • Ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  • Proven ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered and the effectiveness in broadening engagement in the communities served.
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership and communication skills (both written and verbal) as well as personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  • Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual campaigns, capital campaigns, endowment development and the securing of grants.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. If the candidate does not possess this, they must obtain it within 3 years from the date of hire.
  • Essential Functions

    • Advocate the Vision of the Y serving as a Mission-Driven Leader: Inspire and mobilize community members, every Y staff member, program volunteers, board volunteers, Y members, and donors - everywhere the Y has a presence - to make our community stronger. Be seen as an active and integral member of the community. Serve as an ambassador for the Y mission, cause and vision. Maintain the image of a respected community leader.
    • Implement a Strategic Plan: Possess the ability to work effectively with board of directors, volunteers, community leaders, and key staff to identify critical community needs and create annual strategic roadmaps focused on organizational strategies. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in aligning committees and their charts of work to support the strategies and goals of the Y.
    • Build and Manage the Staff Team: The YMCA seeks a "servant leader" who can inspire a positive attitude and build a cohesive team. The new CEO will create a plan to build unity, encourage teamwork, set operational goals tied to a strategic plan, hold staff accountable, and foster individual staff development. Lead by example; remain actively engaged in staff development and performance leading to superior results in programs, member satisfaction and community engagement.
