Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust (NTW) is one of the largest mental health and learning disability Trusts in England employing more than 7,500 staff, serving a population of approximately 1.4 million, providing services across an area totalling 2,200 square miles.

The Trust provides a wide spectrum of mental health, learning disability, neuro-rehabilitation, forensic and substance misuse services as well as other specialist services. The Trust has several nationally renowned services, including specialist services for adults with refractory mental illness, mental health services for young people with a learning disability; forensic services and learning disability services; psychotherapy services, neuropsychiatry; a mother and baby inpatient service and drug and alcohol services for both adults and young people.

North locality- Northumberland & North Tyneside
Central locality - Newcastle and Gateshead
South locality - South Tyneside and Sunderland
In Newcastle the established liaison psychiatry service is a rapidly expanding team which has been awarded transformation funding to provide a 24/7 'Core 24' service in 2017. The team achieved accreditation by the Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation network of the Royal college of Psychiatrists in 2014. The Working Age Adult (WAA) Service and Older People's Service (OPS) work as an integrated team to provide age-related expertise to hospital patients over the age of 16 and take a shared approach to managing the caseload. The team works into the inpatient wards and emergency department of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprising approximately 1800 beds on three hospital sites: Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Freeman Hospital (FRH) and Cherryburn Unit at the Centre for Ageing and Vitality (CAV; formerly Newcastle General Hospital), a few miles apart and linked by a minibus 'hopper'. As well as ward and Emergency Department based liaison, teaching and training, there will be scope to develop outpatient clinics and brief community follow-up, following assessment and treatment for a range of conditions, including medically unexplained symptoms. The post holder will be active in facilitating further developments and developing training opportunities for junior doctors in response to emerging opportunities and need. Medical cover is currently provided on a Monday-Friday, 9-5 basis, although flexible working options will be considered.
Clinical Duties of Post Holder
The team takes a shared approach to caseload management and at any given time there are approximately 20 patients on caseload, with new referrals averaging 4 per day. The experienced nursing team usually carry out an initial assessment, seeking medical input where there is complexity, risk or diagnostic difficulty. Work is allocated at the daily team board round meeting and medical supervision is sought as required according to need. The service provides 24 hour nursing cover with medical input typically later in the pathway. In the emergency admissions unit referrals for over 65s are also currently low, tending to made much later in the admission. Evidence from the RAID model in Birmingham suggests that greater impact upon length of stay may be made if mental health problems are detected and addressed early in the admission pathway. To minimise professional isolation there are many opportunities to mix with colleagues in Liaison and other psychiatric services: weekly CPD is at Campus for Ageing and Vitality with local Consultants and trainees, all Liaison doctors are invited to join the Trustwide Clinical Reference Group and the Regional Network of liaison clinicians. There is an active network of older age psychiatrists locally and regionally and the postholder will be encouraged to participate. The post holder will form part of the joint Clinical and Management Leadership team and provide assessment, treatment and short term follow up of patients aged 65+ with mental health problems in the general hospital.
