The Position

Mental Health Technicians supplement the work of mental health professionals, health specialists, and nursing staff in providing direct client care for clients in a mental health facility.

Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.This position supports SOUTHERN NEVADA ADULT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES (SNAMHS) located at 1650 Community College Drive in Las Vegas. Our Agency's mission is to help adults with mental illness improve their quality of life. Through a team approach, we provide innovative inpatient and outpatient mental health services for the Southern Nevada community. Some of the valuable services we provide include Psychiatric Emergency Services, Inpatient Services, Mobile Crises, Outpatient Counseling, Service Coordination, Intensive Service Coordination, Medication Clinic, Residential Support Programs, Mental Health Court, Consumer Advocacy and Programs for Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) teams. Inpatient services are provided through the new Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital. Outpatient services are provided through four mental health clinics located throughout the Las Vegas community and four rural locations. We are accredited by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. The Mental Health Technician (MHT) 4 takes vital signs, and documents findings in the electronic record. MHT's will be called upon to assist with select nursing procedures and plan and implement daily care for assigned patients, observing consumers for changes in physical, mental or emotional status. The Mental Health Technician is charged to use appropriate self-defense and take-down techniques and respond quickly and appropriately to medical and psychiatric emergencies.

The incumbent will be called upon to exercise leadership, model appropriate behaviors as defined in the agency competencies, manage performance, and influence and motivate techs to reach the expected level of excellence in care. Successful candidates will be highly competent communicators and be able to lead and motivate staff. Because team-building and collaboration will be key functions of the position, candidates will need to be empowering and able to develop staff members. Maintaining high ethical standards in all job elements, the MHT 4 will need to be proficient in conflict management and resolution and work toward creating an environment that is free from disruptive behaviors and works to maintain the highest standard of patient care. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of experience, three of which were paraprofessional experience in a hospital, institutional, or residential, clinic, or community setting providing care, treatment, training and supervision for individuals with mental illness or emotional disturbances. In addition, applicants must have attained and maintained valid mental health certification pursuant to NRS 433.279; OR one year of experience as a Mental Health Technician III or Developmental Support Technician III in Nevada State service and valid mental health certification pursuant to NRS 433.279. Special Notes First aid certification is required within six months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required. Applicants must successfully complete a pre-employment physical and be free of active tuberculosis. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
