Training at Dechert
Your training contract includes a rolling programme of training on everything from specialist legal knowledge and business skills to how to get the best from our state-of-the-art IT systems.
However, we know that the most important training is that which goes on every day, with your supervisor guiding your work and providing you help and feedback. So, in each seat, you will sit with an experienced lawyer, chosen because of your interest and skill in training. You will receive mid- and end-of-seat appraisals, including regular reviews with the partner responsible for your development. Your professional development is monitored on a regular basis by the Graduate Recruitment and Trainee Development Team, as well as your personal "panel" partner, all of whom are available to help with any concerns that you may have from time to time.
Our commitment to your development is reflected in our highly personalised six-seat rotation system. We believe that by allowing you to experience up to six different practice areas during your two-year training, we can help you learn more and give you a sound base for your future career. We work hard to ensure that each seat is right for you as your experience and interests develop. You can also choose to repeat a seat if you are enjoying the work and want to get to know the practice area better.
We recruit up to 10 trainee solicitors each year. Our trainees start work in September. We have recruited and continue to recruit excellent trainees from all academic backgrounds.
Salary & Benefits
Future trainees' GDL and LPC course fees are paid in full, plus they receive a maintenance grant of £10,000 during both years. Trainee solicitor salaries are £45,000 per annum for first years and £50,000 per annum for second years. Other benefits include free permanent life assurance, an Employee Assistance Programme, subsidised gym membership, subsidised staff café and interest-free season-ticket loans. You have the option to join the company pension scheme and private health insurance scheme once you become a second year trainee. Holiday entitlement is 25 days per annum.
Our recruits almost invariably have exceptional academic grades, generally at least AAB (or equivalent) in their A-levels (or equivalent), and undergraduate grades at 2.1 or 1st level. However, our recruits need a wide range of skills to rise to the challenge of the complex work that we do for our clients so we also look for, a genuine interest in business, a high level of commitment, personality and ambition.
Individuals who have accepted a Training Contract at the firm should study the LPC at BPP, Holborn.
