Under the direction and supervision of the Provost, the Director of Athletics leads and administers all aspects of oversight, development, management, coordination and supervision of a competitive intercollegiate athletics department with 22 sports programs, over 90 coaches and support staff, and approximately 500 student-athletes. The Director of Athletics is the senior most strategic leader of the athletic department and serves as the University's principal representative in the field of intercollegiate athletics.
The Director of Athletics also (1) provides strategic and visionary leadership, strategic planning and policy development for the athletics department; (2) establishes and maintains an athletics department that is committed to the University's mission and strategic priorities; (3) administers the overall athletic budget; (4) recruits, manages and evaluates the athletic staff; (5) executes initiatives and special projects regarding micro and macro fundraising efforts; and (6) ensures the athletic department remains in compliance with applicable Title IX, National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA ), SCIAC , and University rules and regulations governing all facets of intercollegiate athletics programs.

Specific Duties:
  • Provides strategic and visionary leadership to the Department of Athletics, including but not limited to developing and implementing policies, procedures, and an organizational structure for the department that ensures its administrative and operational effectiveness, budget management, compliance, and day-to-day operations.
  • Oversees all athletic programs at the University, ensuring the department as a unit is committed to the University's mission and strategic priorities. Provides leadership with goal setting, performance management, budget planning (in collaboration with the Athletic Business Manager), approving various team travel and expenses, managing funds for equipment, travel, facility, training, or related resource needs, and exercising final authority over select expenditures. Also assists in developing and approving competition schedules and assisting with recruiting activities as requested. Additionally, provides strategic oversight for all athletic department administrative support units (athletic training, equipment, and strength and conditioning).
  • Develops and manages effective fiscal operations, policies, and procedures in alignment with University guidelines, including the development and oversight of the overall Athletics Department budget. Supervises and administrates buildings, spaces, areas, and equipment assigned to the Athletics Department. Directs all facility planning and development. Evaluates functions, best practices, and the efficiency of all athletic facilities and spaces.
  • Serves as the spokesperson for the department in approving the hiring of coaches, administrative staff, support staff and other personnel associated with the department. Provides oversight of staff recruitment efforts of the University's intercollegiate athletics program and ensures compliance with State, Federal, University and NCAA rules and regulations by providing guidance and/or policies that engenders compliance with recruiting rules. Oversees staff performance evaluations once hired; and provides ongoing leadership and guidance for current personnel. Monitors and implements gender and minority plans that meet the requirements of Title IX and reflect the values of the University. Oversees all athletic department strategies and initiatives that promote the value of diversity and inclusion in intercollegiate athletics.
  • Executes initiatives and special projects regarding micro and macro fundraising efforts (by identifying and maximizing the various revenue opportunities and income streams available to the Athletic Department). Directs and oversees athletic fundraising, annual support programs and promotions activities. Collaborates with Advancement staff, as appropriate, to actively promote the athletics program and to solicit external funding through advertising, stadium signage, donations and grants, etc.
  • Serves as the liaison between the Athletics Department and all service offices of the university, including Admissions, Financial Aid, Business Office, Registrar, Student Affairs, and all academic areas. The Director of Athletics serves as an active and visible presence for the department. Keeps the Provost apprised of the status of the department and the progress being made in all areas. Serves on the President's Executive Council, and executes other duties as assigned by the Provost.
  • Ensures appropriate understanding and fully supports the academic mission of the University and provides necessary academic support to our student-athletes. Collaborates with athletics staff to promote academic success, retention, and graduation for all student-athletes through partnerships with the campus community.
  • Represents the University at various university, conference, and National ( NCAA ) meetings within the intercollegiate athletics program. Attends various association meetings, alumni events and attends various athletic events at home and away sites. Promotes a positive image of the intercollegiate athletics program and the University by participating in community and professional organizations and representing the University, as a spokesperson for intercollegiate athletics, at professional meetings and on community committees.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A minimum of five years experience with intercollegiate athletic programs at the national level as an administrator, advisor, and/or coach with an understanding of the administrative, financial, and personnel-related responsibilities of an athletic department preferably at a National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA ) athletics institution.
  • Experience in financial and budgetary responsibilities.
  • A Master's degree is required, with a preferred emphasis in Sports Administration, Physical Education, Recreation, or Business.
  • Track record of leading a performance- and outcome-based organization with strategic vision.
  • Excels in organizational management. Has the ability to motivate staff, manage high-performing staff including coaches, and the ability to set and achieve strategic objectives within a complicated budget process.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain a climate of commitment, a culture of respect, diversity, belief in service before self, sportsmanship, and professionalism on all levels.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated awareness and commitment to effectively establishing relationships and positive communications across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to race, gender, sexual preference/identity, physical limitations, class or religious perspectives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing recruitment, student-athlete eligibility, and related functions is required. Ability to stay abreast of current and developing trends (video, voice, data, and computing technologies).
  • Enthusiasm and the ability to thrive in an atmosphere of high stress and constant change.
  • The ability to occasionally travel to fulfill required duties and assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, in English, with a diverse population both orally and in writing.

  • Experience in promoting an environment of world-class academic achievement complementing student-athlete health, safety, and welfare while leading with the highest levels of ethical standards.
  • Fluency with the Division III NCAA intercollegiate marketplace and understanding of all major issues/opportunities within the industry
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • A strong public service orientation to work well with faculty, staff, students, and the community.
  • Coaching experience at the collegiate level.
  • Experience in fundraising.
