Job Description
The design editor is the liaison between the creative team and
the editor in chief. In this role, you must be a self-starter and a
skilled collaborator. The design editor will develop our approach
to visual storytelling, working closely with editors, reporters and
photographers to shape our biggest projects. You are also
responsible for ensuring that we have the resources necessary to
meet deadlines. That includes custom publications and materials for
Puget Sound Business Journal events. You will attend department
manager meetings to discuss production planning as it relates to
editorial, events and sales. Across all platforms, your work will
maintain our high standards for visuals with a keen eye for details
pertaining to accuracy, presentation, photography, typography and
graphics.
Duties
The design editor's duties include:

• Oversees design of weekly paper, digital assets and PSBJ branding
materials.
• In consultation with editor in chief, edits and designs special
reports.
• Oversees mapping, archiving and other maintenance of the weekly
print edition.
• Implement and manage weekly deadlines and daily workflow.
• Contribute story ideas regularly, as well as a constant stream of
ideas for stories already in the pipeline, particularly for special
reports.
• Manages production costs, freelance and contract labor.
• Supervises photographer (in conjunction with editor in chief):
Includes and brainstorms with photographer during editorial
planning process; edits photographer's work after
assignments.
• Supervises graphic designers (in conjunction with editor in
chief): Assigns, edits and reviews event marketing design work;
ensures designer meets company design standards and work is
performed in a timely manner.
Skills
• Must be proficient in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop;
HTML/CSS a plus
• Strong visual storyteller who can drive non-narrative story forms
and infographics
• Comfortable using third-party software/tools to create graphics
and digital interactives
• Has experience editing photos and brainstorming ideas with
photographers
• Strong communicator, able to articulate the design vision to
editorial and business staffers alike
• Works cooperatively and collaboratively with all colleagues and
professionally with sources and vendors
Experience
• One to three years management experience in a design
department
• Mac OS X and extensive knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
(InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, InCopy), HTML/CSS, Flite, and
Power Point
• Illustration ability is a big plus, as are copy editing/writing
and informational graphic skills
Education
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
