TITLE: Sales Manager, Cleveland History Center

RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible to the Director of the Cleveland History Center (CHC), headquarters of Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS) for developing, coordinating, and supervising all CHC sales initiatives - general admission, membership, retail, parking, facility rentals and food services, and expanding them to meet gross and net income goals established in the WRHS annual budget and assuring financial control, accountability, and profitability of all CHC sales operations.

CLASSIFICATION: This position is classified as a Full time professional and is exempt from overtime compensation.

SUPERVISION: Supervises employees, volunteers, and agents engaged in sales and other designated earned income activities.


Collaborate with other vendors, retailers, and wholesalers to increase the profitability of WRHS sales efforts.Coordinate with CHC team regarding all operations and guest service functions, including but not limited to marketing, guest services, facilities, and collections.


Produces a written annual business plan with specific income targets and strategies, quarterly reporting provisions, and sales expense/income analysis.

  1. Responsible for and driven to exceed annual earned income goals as set in the budget and annual business plan.

  2. Oversees facility rentals and food services to assure maximum income generation.

  3. Manages all WRHS retail store operations including product selection, store layouts, presentation, inventory management, and pricing.

  4. Conduct site tours of the Cleveland History Center to interested clients on a one-to-one basis.

  5. Control alcohol inventory for private parties.

  6. Commit to a regular schedule (Tuesday-Saturday; alternating Sundays as needed)

  7. Support income generation initiatives by identifying and recommending programs and activities based on the strengths of the department and that will contribute to the financial success of WRHS.

  8. Acts as Manager on Duty on days assigned, ensuring that the museum is open and ready for business and that all guests and staff have a positive experience.

  9. Develops and actively manages an inventory of existing and potential product offerings

  10. Works closely with the marketing department to develop and implement marketing strategies, targeting specific potential customer groups, in order to capitalize on identified product offerings.

  11. Supports institution-wide evaluation and data collection programs, including visitor experience, exhibits, public programs, and research services.

  12. Select appropriate distribution channels from traditional and web-based sources, and develop a tracking system in order to maximize sales potential of product offerings.

  13. Works closely with the Guest Services Team to provide training for working in the museum store and on other earned income initiatives.

  14. Inventories and coordinates existing earned income initiatives, and develops and implements new earned income initiatives.

  15. Supports and enforces the policies and procedures as set by the Safety & Security Task Force.

  16. Undertakes other duties as may be assigned by the Director of the Cleveland History Center.


The Sales Manager is a member of the Cleveland History Center management team.

  1. The ideal candidate demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit and drive, appropriate academic training, achievement in sales and marketing, an attitude conducive to team building, and the communication and leadership skills necessary to build a successful operation.

  2. An undergraduate degree, preferably in business administration.

  3. Professional level experience of at least five years in a sales capacity, with demonstrated job-related initiative, goal orientation, creativity, achievement, and growth; experience with other not-for-profit organizations is a plus.

  4. Candidate will embody WRHS core values - integrity, stewardship, connectivity, and innovation.
