George Mason University is in search of a Director of Forensics to lead our flagship forensics program. Position: The offering is for a term (non-tenure line) position, on a regularized 9-month contract, salary commensurate with experience and the location, beginning no later than August 25, 2019. The position has teaching and service responsibilities as a faculty member, and can earn an additional 10% of salary with the possibility of summer teaching or management of the summer forensics camp. The position and the program operate within the Department of Communication, and the position reports to the Chair of the Department for an annual faculty evaluation.

Responsibilities: Coordination of program activities, including recruitment, pre-season preparation, scheduling, promotion and online presence, budget, hiring and supervision of the Assistant Director and part time coaches, hosting of tournaments and the George Mason Institute of Forensics (GMIF), development and allocation of student scholarships and assistantships for graduate students, coaching, travel.

Qualifications: Desirable candidates will be well organized, competent at group and interpersonal communication, respectful of diversity, inclusive, capable of effective presentations, and highly motivated.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates MUST have a Masters Degree or equivalent in Communication or a related field;
  • Candidates MUST have at least three (3) years of college forensic administration and coaching experience, preferably as Director of Forensics or Assistant Director of Forensics;
  • Candidates MUST have demonstrated teaching experience and effectiveness in an area of expertise appropriate to teaching classes within the Department of Communication. Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience with student recruitment and program promotion;
  • Demonstrated ability to build collegial departmental and campus unit relationships;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong program alumni connections;
  • Demonstrated ability for fundraising skills to supplement work with the college Development Office;
  • Demonstrated ability to interact well with a diversity of people and be inclusive of a widely varied student body.


About the Department: Masons Communication Department has a collegial faculty committed to excellence, innovation and social relevance. We expect reasonable participation in the life of our community, including career fairs, faculty functions, recruiting sessions and other events. We offer a broad undergraduate program with more than 700 majors; five minor programs; a large M.A. program including strategic, health and science communication specialties; and a focused Ph.D. program emphasizing health and strategic communication. The department also offers graduate programs in science communication. Additionally, the department supports several co-curricular activities, including debate, forensics, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Society for Professional Journalists, and a comprehensive student media organization (newspaper, radio, television, sports announcing, magazine and journal editing, etc.).

The research life of the department includes both undergraduate and graduate research, and is reflected in the activities of its faculty, including the Center for Climate Change Communication, the Center for Media and Public Affairs, and the Center for Health and Risk Communication.
