KTAR News is looking for its next great Managing Editor to train and support news reporters/anchors/editors within the KTAR newsroom. Work under the direction and in the absence of the News Director to plan, execute and coordinate daily news coverage by directing the work of others and exhibiting good journalilsm in all facets of the job, especially while in contact with the public. Possess solid broadcast writing skill, and become an asset to the news team through daily contributions of fresh, relevant news stories. Qualified candidates are required to submit writing samples along with the on-line application. During the interview process, candidates will be required to complete a writing skills test. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Generate story ideas, coordinate information and assign personnel on a daily basis. Send out daybook to all of the news department with assignments. Create a working plan of stories for each morning for Arizona's Morning News. Educate reporters/anchors/editors and hosts on KTAR philosophies on news, presentation and work environment. Direct and coordinate breaking news coverage in concert with the Program Director, News Director and Director of Digital Content. Working in concert with the news director in areas of news content, programming and technical concerns. Develop and implement plans and goals for KTAR feature and investigative series and projects. Provide hosts with timely information, background and suggestions during breaking and non-breaking news situations. Assist in the evaluations and development of staff and on-air product, making recommendations in areas of strengths and needed improvements. Coordinate and form relationships with television news partners for stories/weather needs. Fill-in during various breaking and non-breaking news situations. Integrate/communicate on-air stories to web staff for production on ktar.com. Develop and maintain news sources. Consistently contributes story ideas. Create and maintain a futures file of story ideas, assignments and ongoing projects. Stay updated on all news, read local news sites, follow key social media sources and track TV news. Remain in constant communication with AM and PM news desk editors to be aware of current local stories. Lend ideas from current events to talk show hosts and producers for content. Create synergy with other Bonneville sister stations in development and sharing of compelling news and feature content. Oversee operations of the command center, train and support editor staff. Coordinate and supervise newsroom interns in following their curriculum. REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: College degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent experience Three years of experience in a professional broadcast journalism environment Possess solid News judgement Passion for news and current affairs Aggressive attitude with a strong desire to advance in the broadcast media. A news junkie. Strong desire to work at the state's largest and most respected news radio station Spends time researching topics Ability to be respected by newsmakers during interviews Multi-tasking pro. Ability to be organized with the capability to concentrate on more than one event at a time, able to follow written and verbal instructions under moderate supervision. Willing to be active in the community Knowledge of newswire services and a working knowledge of computer skills. Working knowledge of KTAR News computer systems including the NewsBoss automation system. Quick learner who is fully committed to meeting the challenge Ability to dig up stories, enterprise news a must. Excellent digital audio editing skills. Social Media presence and proficiency in Twitter, Facebook and Instagram platforms. Ability to be precise and accurate both in writing and production In performing responsibilities, exhibit a thorough working knowledge and understanding of the BIC "Investigative Reporting Guidelines" as well as KTAR policies and FCC Rules and Regulations. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, BUT NOT REQUIRED: Experience using the NewsBoss automation system Bilingual in English and Spanish PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively. Substantial physical movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction with good eye and hand coordination. Lift, move, and carry up to 20 pounds on occasion.
