Job Description
The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Development Officer for Athletics. The athletics development officer is responsible to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospective donors (individuals, corporations, foundations) for charitable financial support for intercollegiate athletics at North Georgia through gifts (major, capital and planned), grants and sponsorships. Reporting directly to the VP of Advancement, and in cooperation with the Director of Athletics, this development officer will work primarily to promote North Georgia Athletics to all appropriate audiences for the purpose of attracting direct financial support for the programs. He/she will work as part of the Institutional Advancement team to promote the goals of the university, and in partnership with the Athletics Department to influence programs and projects to maximize private financial support. This work will be primarily conducted away from the office; extensive travel is required. Timely submission of reports is a critical component of this job, and will be evaluated on a periodic basis, as will quality of work and program outcomes. The athletic development officer is required to maintain a current driver's license and be able to drive themselves in the course of their travels. The athletics development officer is also required to maintain an active smartphone/PDA with an appropriate service account, and to make that phone number publicly available; a stipend will be provided to offset the cost of business use of this device.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

The Development Officer for Athletics will:
  • Work in close cooperation with the University's VP of Advancement and the Director of Athletics, the Development Officer will maintain active, ongoing relationships with each team/program within the Department of Athletics to ensure maximum effectiveness of fundraising efforts, and to keep the Development team aware of resources, needs, projects and funding opportunities within the Athletics Department.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospective donors (individuals, corporations, foundations) for gift and grants as appropriate to support intercollegiate athletics and the University of North Georgia. Identify donors for referral to other solicitors (President, Vice President, Athletic Director, Coach, etc.) and steward those relationships. Operate in partnership with Athletics and Advancement staff to plan and execute events, record and manage information, and manage assignments in pursuit of identified goals.
  • Plan and organize work and travel schedules, according to established priorities and fundraising goals, and within established budget guidelines. This may include donor research, development of action plans, etc.
  • Prepare and submit timely and accurate reports of expenditures, contact information, and program outcomes.
  • Actively participate in scheduled Advancement and Development team meetings for professional development, reporting and planning.
  • Actively participate as an ex-officio member of the Nighthawks Athletics Club Board offering support where appropriate.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Must have understanding and appreciation of intercollegiate athletics and development operations within a comprehensive university setting.
  • Working knowledge of planned giving basics strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Personal solicitation experience.
  • Proficiency in communications, marketing, donor relations/stewardship.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, recruit, train, and support volunteers.
  • Ability to work and travel independently.
  • Superior problem solving ability.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and see projects through to a timely completion with strict attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with high level university administrators, faculty, donors, alumni, parents, and volunteers.
  • Must be flexible with work schedule and available to work weekends and evenings when necessary.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.


Certifications/Licenses & Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree; Master's preferred.
  • Three years of related professional fundraising experience; business experience highly valued.
  • Current driver's license; CFRE desired.
  • Personal solicitation experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of database management; statistical analysis and Raiser's Edge® experience preferred.
  • Incumbent is frequently away from assigned work desk/phone due to official UNG work responsibilities or travel and requires real time communication with others.
