Director of Photography Position Description: Direct all facets of photography for 25-sport Intercollegiate Athletics Department. Serve as the primary photographer for the athletics department including all studio, specialty, event and live game photography. The director of photography drives the strategic use of imagery in the department's branding efforts. This position identifies the images that will elicit excitement from all Gopher Athletics stakeholders in our athletic venues and in all digital mediums.
Additionally, this position will manage group of freelance and student photographers for home and road events and manage budget for photography and maintain all photography equipment. Position is required to strategize event and game coverage on a weekly basis to serve needs of each support staff unit and sport recruiting staffs.
This position works within the Gopher Digital unit and works closely with all support staff groups and coaching staffs.
Job description: 50% - Serve as the primary photographer for entire athletics department (studio, specialty and live game photography) including production, development and editing of original materials. Travel with select sports and various postseason tournaments as needed. Work closely with all teams and support staff for scheduling of head shots, team photos, group photos and other photos as necessary. Strategize use of imagery for all department visual branding needs. Responsible for post-game/event photograph gallery development and creation.
30% - Strategize and manage photography schedule including hiring of freelance photographers for home and away events, fundraising, marketing and other specialty events (more than 300 events annually). Receive images from photographers and handle all invoicing for their payment. Management of photography budget and equipment (includes freelance photographers and all camera and studio equipment).
10% - Works closely with marketing, communications, social media and branding teams to ensure consistent alignment of promotional and fundraising media and activities.
10% - Management of athletics department photo server. Manage all editing, labeling, categorizing and structure of the server.
BA/BS in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Art or related field with 4 years of professional experience OR
BA/BS with at least 6 years of progressive communications experience. Expertise in sports action photography and studio photography. Ability to work nights and weekends.
Experience working closely with an NCAA Division I athletics program or professional sports franchise.
Expertise with Adobe Creative suite.
Experience shooting and editing video.
