Subway seeks to hire an experienced Sr. Data Warehouse Architect to work closely with our software development, reporting, and business teams to recommend design, build, and support database structures based on the data storage and retrieval needs of each project. The Sr. Data Warehouse Architect will be responsible for building solutions to business needs, perform data validation and defect analysis, and perform data warehouse maintenance and up-keep. A successful candidate will deliver scalable and flexible solutions that conform to Subway's data design and governance strategies utilizing our AWS environment and Amazon Redshift data warehouse.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Determines database structural requirements by analyzing client operations, applications, and programming; reviewing objectives with clients; evaluating current systems;
  • Develops database solutions by designing proposed system; defining database physical structure and functional capabilities.
  • Maintains database performance by identifying and resolving production and application development problems; calculating optimum values for parameters; evaluating, integrating, and installing new releases; answering user questions.
  • Prepares users by conducting training.
  • Provides database support by coding utilities, responding to user questions, and resolving problems.
  • Creates and maintains documentation of the database design specification and data models.
  • Daily table / view / query development, and testing.
  • Responsible for daily defect resolution and tier 3 support.
  • Responsible for overall data warehouse (Amazon Redshift) performance and data availability (weekly query tuning / database maintenance).
  • Refactor, design, and tune the data warehouse based on an understanding of Amazon Redshift's infrastructure.
  • Third Party Vendor/Headquarters code releases and support.
  • Database and data access layer related code reviews and mentorship of junior developers.
  • Participation in scalability and high-level architecture discussions.
  • Responsible for physical data placement/organization such as partitioning, segmentation, and distribution.


The successful candidate will have:

  • 5+ years' experience in data warehouse design and/or development.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer or Information Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven record of accomplishment of implementing data warehouse solutions in massively parallel processing (MPP) architectures.
  • Proficient in data warehouse design methodologies.
  • Familiar with AWS cloud concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with Amazon Redshift.
  • Hands-on experience with Erwin Data Modeler & Erwin Mart Server.

Experience necessary for effective job performance:

  • Hands-on experience implementing MPP data warehouse solutions with a proven record of documentation.
  • Proficient in data modeling. Experience with Erwin Data Modeler preferred.
  • Experience with implementing Extract, Load, then Transform integration solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with Erwin Data Modeler & Erwin Mart Server.
  • Hands-on experience with Amazon Redshift.

Experience which would set the candidate apart:

  • Amazon Web Services Certifications (Architect or Developer track).
  • Practical understanding of public cloud architecture.
  • Experience working with or implementing a data lake on Amazon S3. Experience with data integration design, development, and testing (Matillion for Redshift & AWS ELT services).
