Chief Information/Technology Officer, Office of the Chief Operating Officer - McDonough School of Business

Located at the intersection of business, government, and international relations, Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business (MSB) develops principled leaders committed to serving both business and society. Through our global perspective, we prepare students to compete in today's international business environment.

Founded in 1957, the McDonough School of Business has grown to serve over 1,300 undergraduate students and offers a range of graduate degree programs that serve more than 1,200 students, including the full-time and Flex MBA programs, the Master of Science in Finance, the Executive Master's in Leadership, the Executive MBA, and a joint program with the Walsh School of Foreign Service - the Master of Arts in International Business and Policy. The school also supports a series of faculty-led centers and initiatives that are dedicated to an array of business and policy issues.

The Chief Information/Technology Officer (CIO/CTO) is the senior manager for all computer and technical services at the McDonough School of Business. Working cooperatively with central University Information Services, s/he is responsible for all IT operations, classroom technology, coordination with IT providers, budget, personnel management and long-range planning; leads business school leads decision making for all issues, services, planning and implementation of Information Technology in the School of Business; and carries out a vision for technology that is smart, innovative, and distinctive. Reporting to the Associate Dean and Chief Operating Officer, the CIO/CTO has duties that include but are not limited to:

Long-range technical infrastructure planning, personnel management, and financial planning and implementation for expenditures of more than $3M annually

  • Uses innovative and updated techniques and tools to monitor present computing activities and plan future implementation strategies for MSB user support of student, faculty and staff IT issues.
  • Coordinates with other entities within the University to maximize the compatibility of information exchange and processing standards.
  • Manages maintenance of hardware and software and other technical systems as required, including contract administration and personnel management.
  • Ensures integration of all new systems within MSB. Ensure appropriate approval process.
  • Advise the Dean on policy and priorities through participation in MSB computer related committees and user groups

Long-range vision and planning

  • Plans and implements a consistent, coordinated infrastructure upgrade process that acquires, installs, and operates new hardware and software systems, including server operating systems and network backbone infrastructure from the wire to users' personal computers.
  • Ensures MSB users are educated in the proper and efficient use of emerging technologies, including use of cloud and internet technologies.

IT financial management

  • Formulates long-range financial plans and annual budgets.
  • Regularly monitors budget to ensure adherence to budget spending plan and to determine projected year-end budget position.
  • Controls, coordinates, and modifies all MSB purchase and maintenance programs related to computer technology.
  • Ensures all MSB programs adhere to fiscal guidelines while providing updated technology.

Technology-related communications and training

  • Meets regularly with the Dean's senior staff and provides comprehensive briefs as appropriate to ensure that the Dean and his/her staff are informed as to the direction and cost of technology initiatives.
  • Establishes MSB policy on matters affecting the computing environment, including costs, access, security, maintenance and training.
  • Ensures that policy is clearly promulgated to the user community.

Advisor on IT policy

  • Serves as an active member on all policy-making or advisory organizations affecting MSB network operations, including Information Technology Advisory Committee, Service Providers Committee, and Main Campus Computing Committee.
  • Provides MSB requirements and advances MSB interests in these forums.
  • Becomes involved in GU committees researching advanced technologies and their application to GU.

Staff management

  • Manages a staff of 15 full-time employees, several contracted employees, and 50+ student employees.
  • Manages all aspects of hiring, termination, recruiting, pay and benefits management for IT personnel, including technical staff for hardware and software support, web access, and Help Desk support.
  • Directly supervises three subordinates - Senior Technology Engineer, Director of IT Operations, and Director of Applications and Database Development.


  • Master's degree
  • At least 10 years relevant experience in leadership positions in a corporate or academic information systems environment
  • Experience in the areas of data management, security, privacy, networks, and cloud computing
  • Basic understanding of the value of emerging technologies related to data collection and business analytics, artificial intelligence, online and hybrid classroom education, and virtual/augmented reality
  • Significant experience in leadership, management, project management, cross-organizational relationship building, and strategic planning
  • A strong devotion to supporting the school's mission and to serving its faculty, students and administrative constituencies
