Research Librarian I or II
The Curtis Laws Wilson Library of the Missouri University of Science and Technology invites applications for the position of Research Librarian. Reporting to the Library Director, the Librarian provides expertise and leadership on Reference and Research Services. The relatively small size of the library means there will be many opportunities to work in cross-functional teams as well as play a leadership role in initiatives to lead the library forward in an ever-changing environment.
Missouri S&T is one of the nation's leading research universities. Located about 100 miles west of St. Louis in the community of Rolla, Missouri, S&T is an accessible, safe and friendly campus surrounded by Ozarks scenery. Missouri S&T offers degrees in engineering, the sciences, liberal arts, humanities and business, with master's and Ph.D. programs available in many of the science and engineering programs and master's degrees in biological sciences, business administration and technical communication. With nearly 9,000 students enrolled online and on campus, Missouri S&T is big enough to accommodate a diverse population but small enough for individuals to stand out. Responsibilities
  • Marketing: Develops and deploys marketing and advertising materials in print and in pixel. In collaboration with other librarians, develops a plan for library displays and deploys displays collaboratively. Designs signage for various library events and standing needs.
  • Assessment: Performs statistical, qualitative, and quantitative analysis for various library projects Develops measures for the efficacy of library initiatives and practices.
  • Reference: Staffs the Service Desk. Provides assistance with reference questions from patrons in person, by phone, and by email. Answers questions from interlibrary loan regarding difficult interlibrary loan requests. Maintains subject guide pages on the library website.
  • Instruction: Provides bibliographic instructions sessions for assigned academic departments. Provides individualized research assistance appointments to provide one-on-one instruction in library research resources and methods. Creates and maintains online tutorials. Works collaboratively with public services staff to reach out to academic units and programs.
  • Collection development: Engages in collection management, including selection and deselection, storage, strategic collection planning. Serves as liaison for assigned departments for collection development and management.
  • Liaison duties: Serves as contact between assigned departments and the library. Meets with new faculty in assigned departments to provide an introduction to the library; meets with all faculty in assigned departments to promote library materials and services. Advocates for assigned departments during budgetary discussions.
Minimum Qualifications
ALA-accredited master's degree at start date in position. Strong communication skills, ability and desire to learn new technologies. Self-directed. Excellent team-member.
Preferred Qualifications
One or more years of professional Library experience or equivalent. Management skills, Excel skills.
Environmental & Physical Demands: This position requires working with (and in the vicinity of) materials that may contain or produce dust, molds, and other allergens; the ability to lift and handle books; and the ability to push a cart and handle boxes weighing in excess of fifty pounds.
