Job Description
Basic Function & Responsibility:
Install, inspect and maintain campus communications/networking facilities to include copper, fiber optic, and communications room hardware.
Provide technical expertise on communications equipment purchases, placement, configuration, operation and maintenance.

Essential Functions:
  • Install, terminate, test and repair wiring, equipment and peripherals for switched and non-switched services both voice and data.
  • Monitor system performance, review nightly logs, and research and resolve issues.
  • Interpret written requests, coordinate work with customers regarding such services and complete required documentation. Perform on-call duties and repair of existing services
  • Use desktop software, including internally-developed software, Microsoft Office, emailed and system interface software.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing operations on campus fiber optic facilities.
  • Participate in telecom infrastructure installation for large construction and renovation projects. Renovate existing and construct new telecommunication rooms.
Supervision is received from technician supervisor.
Functional and technical supervision may be exercised over project teams, but no direct administrative supervision is exercised.
Project teams range in size from 3 to 20 staff.

Minimum Qualifications
In appraising the relative qualifications of candidates for all levels, consideration will be given to the extent and type of experience with various information technology functions and to the extent and type of pertinent information and formal training.
Possess experience in telecommunications wiring, electrical wiring and / or construction trades.
Education in related area (Telecommunications, Computer Science or Network Operations) may be substituted for experience.
