Basic Function

Performs complex engineering work coordinating with agency departments to ensure continuous improvement of rail fleet reliability & availability.

Example Of Duties

  • Coordinates with agency departments to ensure continuous improvement of rail fleet reliability & availability
  • Performs continuous assessment of rail vehicle's reliability & availability for all fleets
  • Coordinates with agency departments to ensure failures and events are properly logged and tracked and work orders are being issued and completed properly
  • Coordinates with Rail Quality Assurance and Capital Project Teams to receive and review reports on fleet/vehicle failure trends
  • Coordinates with agency departments to ensure failure reports from contractors and vendors are expedited and timely
  • Ensures failure reports clearly identify the root cause of the failure
  • Ensures failure mitigations address the root cause without compromise to vehicle performance, safety, reliability, or maintainability
  • Coordinates with agency departments to ensure approved mitigations are applied in a priority order to effected fleets/vehicles
  • Performs follow-up assessment to confirm application of mitigation addressed issue and improved fleet/vehicle reliability and availability
  • Prepares monthly reports for Office of Chief Operations Officer regarding activities, major issues, and reliability and availability trends
  • Plans, organizes, assigns, implements and manages engineering projects in accordance with budget and schedule requirements
  • Assures project compliance with design criteria and standards, workplans, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements and operational needs
  • Participates in the engineering configuration management process to maintain current engineering records for rail vehicles
  • Reviews contract documents for compliance with design codes and standards, design criteria and policies and procedures; and substantiates contractor invoices
  • Supports development of safety, security systems, facilities, and quality assurance certification standards
  • Reviews designs for quality, constructability and cost effectiveness; recommends design changes
  • Works with in-house engineering and construction disciplines, consultants and/or contractors to identify and resolve problems which may impact the progress of the project or users existing or planned operational performance
  • Communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures in support of the agency's safety vision and goals; and maintains accountability for the safety performance of all subordinate employees
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Requirements For Employment

  • Bachelor's degree - Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • 5 years of professional experience in reliability engineering
  • Valid California Class C driver license
Preferred Qualifications

Due to the competitiveness of the recruitment, consideration may be given to those candidates who demonstrate the following additional qualifications:
  • Experience with Condition Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance Techniques in an asset maintenance or manufacturing environment

  • Experience with computerized maintenance systems and processes, and Continuous Improvement Programs

  • Professional certificates/licenses: State of California registration as a Professional Engineer in the appropriate discipline
Special Conditions:
  • Occasional exposure to weather, physical, mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards during site visits

  • Travel to construction sites and access areas under construction


  • Theories, principles, and current practices of engineering
  • Fundamentals of mechanical, electrical, vehicle, systems and environmental engineering as they relate to assigned reliability projects
  • Engineering mathematics and computer applications
  • Contract administration and budgeting
  • Project management and control practices
  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing engineering design, construction, and safety practices


  • Perform complex reliability analysis in assigned discipline
  • Communicate clearly to interface with Rail Fleet Services, Rail Vehicle Engineering, and Capital Project Teams (CPT) for vehicle overhauls & procurements
  • Serve as lead for in-house specialized engineering activities for rail transit engineering projects from reliability perspective
  • Monitor and evaluate work by consultants and construction contractors
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Compile, analyze and interpret complex data in order to prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence
  • Use computer-aided tools and products
  • Analyze situations, identify problems, and recommend solutions
  • Exercise judgment and creativity in making decisions
  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, and budgets
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
