Do you have a passion for the environment and meeting the challenge of our climate emergency?

Our client, a wildlife trust needs you to coordinate the newly formed Peatland Partnership and enable peat restoration in Somerset and North Somerset.

Peatland Partnership Project Coordinator
Salary: £28,500 pro rata (£17,100 for 0.6 FTE)
Contract type: Fixed term, ending in March 2023
Working hours: Part time, 22.5 hrs across the week
Location: Remote working

This is a key role for the Somerset Peatland Partnership. The post will be responsible for these objectives being met:

1. 1000 Ha of degraded peatland on a trajectory to recovery by 2025

2. 262,500 cumulative tonnes of CO2e emission reductions by 2050*

3. Somerset Peatland Partnership fully established for Somerset and North Somerset

4. 2 applications to the DEFRA Nature for Climate Fund Restoration Grant, one in 2022 for the first tranche of sites and again in 2023 for the remainder.

Peatlands form the largest area of semi-natural habitat in the UK, home to a wide variety of wildlife some entirely dependent on the exacting conditions of peatland ecosystems, others more generalist wetland species. They are also Britain's most important terrestrial store of carbon. Yet, every peatland in the UK is damaged. As part of resolving the climate and biodiversity crises, we face, the 2020 Somerset Climate Strategy - Natural Environment Workstream includes an action to "establish a Peatland Partnership to protect the peat they have and focus on restoration". The need for such a partnership is urgent to protect and where practical restore Somerset's remaining peatlands.

They need a passionate climate and nature advocate experienced in the wider environment and confident to lead a small team towards restoring lowland peatland.

The role is a fixed term contract, ending in March 2023. Working 22.5 hrs across the week, which may include some evening and weekend work, you will be home based with travel across Somerset and so access to a vehicle and full, clean driving licence is essential.

*Calculated from moving 1000 Ha from 'extensive drained grassland' (emitting 13 tonnes CO2e/ha/yr) to 'near natural fen' (sequestering 1 tonnes CO2e/ha/yr) x 25 years. 14 tonnes CO2e x 1000 x 25 = 350,000 tonnes. To provide some head room and allowing time for habitats to change sufficiently we have estimated 75% of this 350,000 = 262,500 tonnes.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday 21st January, with interviews to be conducted online via Zoom on either Thursday 27th or Friday 28th January.

Please note that we will review applications throughout the advertising period and may close the advert early if a suitable applicant is found.
