General Motivation

Energy production is responsible for almost three quarters of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce these emissions and fight climate change, more and more sectors of the economy are electrifying, and the production of this electricity is shifting towards wind and solar power. As this happens, power grids must maintain their key property of always perfectly balancing electricity supply and demand - an increasingly difficult task as more and more of the supply is influenced by the weather.

About Dexter

Dexter Energy is an Amsterdam-based startup that's solving this problem using AI-based forecasting and optimization services for energy companies. Our software makes renewables more predictable and profitable, helping push fossil fuels out of the market, and speeding up the energy transition.

As part of our load forecasting team, you will be responsible for our API and our customer's integration with it. This enables them to access the team's machine learning models for forecasting solar and wind power production and forecasting power consumption of households and large-scale users.

Why are we hiring now

Following our recent Series A funding round, we are currently accelerating the growth of our company. We're hiring for a new Junior Software Engineer role who will help us scale our platform to better support the inflow of new customers. Our customers manage thousands of renewable assets, and optimize them every day using our Software as a Service forecasting products.

What you'll be doing

  • Helping new and current customers integrate with our forecasting platform. This involves validating the correctness and stability of data streams; explaining concepts in our REST API; answering technical questions; and maintaining API documentation and tutorials.

  • Developing internal Python modules that are used by several teams at Dexter. Over time you can become the owner of at least one such module and make decisions about its features and architecture.

  • Writing and maintaining code to integrate with customer's infrastructure - in the rare case that the customer does not run this code themselves.

About you

  • You have a BSc in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

  • You quickly pick up new knowledge, are looking for a place to grow your software engineering skills and are eager to learn new things.

  • You are a great communicator who can explain technical concepts to customers with varying levels of programming knowledge.

Technical requirements

  • You are a self-sufficient Python developer with experience in numpy, pandas and data visualisation.

  • You have previously worked with git and automated testing, and have basic understanding of software design patterns.

  • You have some experience with REST APIs, including programmatic usage and through eg Postman.

What we have to offer

  • Competitive salary

  • Company laptop of your choice

  • 30 day holiday package

  • Training budget and internal knowledge sessions with seasoned engineers

  • Working with cloud infrastructure

  • Remote working options up to 2-3 days per week

  • After one year, you have the option to transition to a more senior engineering position in our Back End or MLOps team.

Other perks of working at Dexter

  • Work in a clean-tech scale-up working towards a cleaner energy future.

  • Contribute to a highly innovative and entrepreneurial AI business as it scales and grows.

  • Make decisions quickly in a low hierarchy environment.

  • The opportunity to gain valuable experience working on varied technology platforms with multiple customers

  • Collaborate within an ambitious team, which also values a healthy work-life balance. We encourage you to plan work around the hobbies that you want to pursue!

  • Learn a lot of things in a short time, from colleagues who are excited to share their knowledge about the energy industry, software engineering, or anything else.

  • Get to work in a modern Python + Docker + k8s microservices-based stack, with a well-tested codebase, standardized CI/CD pipelines, and passionately maintained documentation. We follow best practices to the bone and love to write great software!
