The Director of Database & Middleware Infrastructure is responsible for operational and service management processes to ensure that quality, efficiency and agility goals are achieved. As a member of the IT senior infrastructure leadership team, the role contributes to the development and execution of the enterprise-wide IT strategy. This role has overall responsibility of the enterprise database platform comprising of Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB and Sybase. This role will also oversee the management of the dedicated middleware/application support teams.
This individual will oversee a team of 20+ database and middleware engineers including two Managers. The Director of Database & Middleware will work closely with decision makers in other departments to identify, recommend, develop, implement and support cost-effective technology solutions for all aspects of the organization. This position will also define and implement IT infrastructure technologies, policies, procedures, and best practices.
Director of Database & Middleware will have solid technical infrastructure experience, strong project management acumen and excellent vendor management skills, in addition to a superior, service-oriented approach to database and middleware infrastructure operations.
In addition as part of leadership team your responsibilities will include:
  • Drive database & middleware planning, implementation, and support across enterprise. This role will collaborate across Infrastructure, Development, Security, QA, Analytics, and other teams to deliver innovative, efficient, quality, and secure database solutions.
  • Focus on providing a portfolio of data products across the entire data lifecycle, including database, cloud data storage and retrieval, data archiving, data governance, data policy, secure data logistics, and data transfer.
  • Have a deep knowledge of the business area with technical fluency to identify the right solution for the right business problem. By collaborating with other team members and internal stakeholders you will develop a robust, effective roadmap for the product area.
  • Derive and enforce Database & Middleware Platform policies, standards, processes, and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators and service level objectives for continually improving the performance and availability of database and middleware platforms.
  • Oversee the monitoring, maintenance, upgrade, and administration of all database and middleware platforms to achieve great customer experience, system availability, performance, and security objectives.
  • Review performance and capacity of database platforms to manage the optimization of operating costs, improve operational efficiency, increase reliability and performance, productivity levels, and upgrade requirements (Your quest for better continues...).
  • Responsible for database disaster recovery and data replication, including planning, documentation, implementation and failover testing (Miracles are occasionally expected).
  • Managing 3rd party vendors and service providers, performance, SLA's, incidents, issue/problem resolution, and escalation.
  • Implementing strategies to attract, retain, motivate and develop talent in their organization.
  • Directs teams, ensuring they are working together effectively. Partners with and integrates across other areas of the company, resolving conflicts, and managing competing priorities.
  • Manages and resolves internal and external client issues, including competing demands, sensitive situations, and conflicts within their organization and/or with other teams.
  • Mentor team members to ensure cohesive thriving for successful delivery.
  • Report to executive management on major accomplishments, issues and concerns.
Qualifications / Education:
  • Bachelor Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science and/or Engineering Required.
  • 15++ years of experience in a Senior level leadership over Information Systems in area of Infrastructure and Database IT operations.
  • Be a proven leader in the database technologies, middleware technology is a huge plus.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of MS SQL database administration leadership in a large organization.
  • Experience in the management of enterprise data lake, master data management (MDM).
  • Experience managing cloud DB software projects utilizing agile methodologies in a mission-critical environment.
  • Adept at quickly ascertaining the technical status of issues raised, using limited information, and formulating the best possible issue-resolution plan.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry specific practices, with special focus on securing and monitoring cloud-based solutions.
  • Significant experience with project/program management practices such as resource allocation, scope management, change management, risk management, escalation, etc.
  • Strong customer relationship management skills with ability to prioritize and develop creative solutions to problems.
  • Experience with big data management platforms, data lake, master data management, data taxonomy, creating company-wide data plans, data reconciliation, and data-driven growth strategies.
  • Understanding of software performance tools, metrics, and benchmarks.
  • Ability to communicate to both very technical audiences as well as presenting complex technical designs to senior leadership.
  • Knowledge of the DevOps and/or DevSecOps cultures and principles.
