Working for client organisation who are building and then operating UK’s High Speed Rail network.

IT Project Manager is accountable for the end-to-end delivery of IT projects of varying size that may have high levels of complexity and carry elements of risk, ensuring dependencies are managed, stakeholders and sponsors are effectively communicated to and overall the project and delivers the expected benefits to Hs2.

The IT Project Manager team consists of 12 PM’s of varying levels whom are managing a workload of over 50 projects at anyone time – managing 4-7 projects each varying in value from £300k to £1.5m and consists of a wide variety of projects – SSAS, Purchase products / applications, office moves, windows 10, LAN, WAN, Microsoft, Dynamics, Power Apps, security passports, health & Safety etc.

Working Situation

The office location Birmingham, Snowhill you will work a flexible hybrid model moving to 5 days a fortnight; however, this will be a gradual move and take into account the current state of the pandemic. Overall this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from.

Duties & Responsibilities

* To have overall accountability for managing allocated projects to time, budget, and scope in line with sponsor’s and business’ requirements, ensuring that any changes to agreed scope, time and budget are managed.

* To be responsible for keeping track of project progress utilising most appropriate tools and provide status updates to relevant governance forums and other stakeholders as required.

* To be responsible for identifying, resolving and escalating risks, issues and concerns through to Programme Manager, utilising existing governance frameworks to do so.

* To be accountable for contributing to the creation, agreement and control of budgets for projects. To agree escalation points, key milestones, and time, cost, quality and safety targets to ensure that objectives are achieved in line with portfolio plans.

* To be responsible for providing matrix management to ensure quality communication during a project.

* To be accountable for the management of delivery throughout the entire project life cycle.

* To be responsible for being the main point of escalation for project and supplier issues such as resourcing, budgets or delays.

* To be responsible for stakeholder management throughout the project life-cycle.

Required Criteria


* Financial management. Ability to contribute towards or set budgets in complex environments. Ability to write or input into business cases and able to communicate business-value propositions.

* Life-cycle perspective. Ability to apply practical knowledge and experience to multiple parts of a product life cycle. Ability to recognise when appropriate next steps, deliverables and resources at all stages of the product life cycle.

* Maintaining delivery momentum. Ability to optimise the delivery flow of teams by actively addressing the most complicated risks, issues and dependencies.

* Making a process work. Ability to identify and challenge organisational processes of increasing complexity and those processes that are unnecessarily complicated.

* Planning. Ability to manage a continual planning process in a complex environment. Ability to plan beyond project delivery and identify dependencies in plans across services and coordinate delivery.

* Stakeholder Management – essential to be a competent communicator able to keep multiple stakeholders/sponsors informed at anyone time.


* Knowledge of a range of methodologies (E.g. but not limited to, Waterfall, agile or lean) their implications and how they can be integrated in an IT portfolio of change.

* Knowledge of business and IT aligned governance methodologies and frameworks (Enterprise Architecture, Service Design, Product Management and Service Management)

Type of experience:

* Experience of managing multiple projects in either an IT Portfolio, Service Delivery or Change function within a complex or highly regulated environment.

* Experience of forecasting and managing demand and costs and prioritising spend based on return on investment, and financial governance and reporting.

* Experience of producing Programme Management and Business Information reports, for the purpose of governance and audit requirements
