Our financial sector client is a growing company that is in early stages of a major program to improve its digital presence. Over the next 5 years, the business has committed to fund strategic projects to support the growth strategy. The initial focus is on foundational work to:

Create to a cloud-based Dev/Ops environment based on an APIs that will ensure loose coupling of our applications.

Provision a number of industry standard B2B services to improve our ability to work with external partners.

Implement an enterprise Data Management strategy to ensure we can meet the growing information needs of the business.

There is a requirement for a Solutions Architect (DevOps) to work as part of the architecture team to develop/evolve our DevOps platform. Looking for a talented individual who can quickly become productive within our complex technical environment. The successful candidate must have experience of working in an Agile Continuous Integration environment, and have leadership experience and focused on quality of implementation.

Job Purpose

The Solutions Architect develops appropriate architecture and designs for application and infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will participate and advise during the implementation of these projects to ensure successful deployment and transition to the production environment, and will be expected to conform to the approved methodologies and standards in delivering solution architecture that is compliant with Portfolio and Enterprise Architecture direction.

This is a very hands-on role, so you will be passionate about technology and quality driven processes. You will yourself have been an excellent developer, who will shape the delivery methods of developers and operational resources. Our Architects lead by example, taking the heavy lift out of implementation patterns for processes and technology. We are specifically looking for an individual with previous experience developing and implementing a DevOps platform.

You will be part of a team responsible for the definition and implementation of best practices for Software Development, analysing, executing, and streamlining DevOps practices:

To be successful you will need to demonstrate:

Clear understanding of the impact of digitisation on the Life & Pensions sector and on IS delivery.

In-depth experience of developing DevOps platforms;

Ability to influence & effectively support Senior IS and Business leaders;

Excellent collaboration skills both with your own team and with your peers across the IS organisation.

Reporting to the Lead IS Architect, this senior role will be providing direction and leadership to project teams, including mentoring others. It interacts with Business Management, Senior Management, internal companies, external partners, third party vendors, and/or other divisions.

Key Accountabilities

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Develop DevOps platforms for application and infrastructure projects;

Contribute to the strategic direction of systems architecture across the I.S. Enterprise Architecture;

Contribute to/forms the strategic directions for the use of DevOps concepts, technologies, languages and patterns;

Provide direction and leadership to project teams;

Ensure solutions adhere to present and future business objectives.

Specific duties:

You will be part of a team responsible for the definition and implementation of best practices for Software Development. Analyzing, executing, and streamlining DevOps practices;

Automating development processes with the right tools;

Facilitating development process and operations;

Essential Skills, Experience & Competencies

7+ years systems/solutions architecture experience;

Strong stakeholder management and communications skills, both written and verbal to communicate complex ideas and explain technology and systems;

Architectural knowledge of the Azure & AWS public cloud platforms, integration and reporting technologies;

Knowledge and hands-on experience of data, databases, and data technologies including AI, ML, ETL, BI;

You know how to prototype in collaboration, to better understand what a business problem, explore a complicated concept, or demonstrate the art of the possible;

Track record of delivering high quality, complex technical solutions in a large enterprise environment;

Good knowledge of Application Engineering, and DevOps/Agile practices - experience of Agile Methodologies and operating in agile/scrum based teams;

Strong competencies in Strategic Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Problem Solving, Working on own initiative;

Experience of Balancing Workloads, and Staff Mentoring;

Candidates should have worked within a recognised application/service delivery process and methodology and understand the importance of Change Management, Testing and Documentation;

Candidates must have experience in producing high quality architectural and design documentation, and delivering presentations to senior management and project teams. The core language is English;

Candidates must have a good knowledge of current Application, Infrastructure and Security Frameworks;

Candidates must have designed and then participated as the Project Architect in the delivery of Application and/or Infrastructure Solutions, and be able to reference successful implementations.

Some technologies used are:

- MS Azure cloud environment.

- Container technologies like Kubernetes/Docker.

- OS: AIX, Microsoft Windows Server

- Relational Databases and data warehousing technology - in particular SQL Server & Oracle & MySQL

- Authentication: IBM TAM/TIM, Active Directory,

- eBusiness applications using J2EE

Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills - ability to explain complex IT applications in simple user friendly language;

Specific Technical Skills & Experience Required

In depth knowledge of at least three of Java Test Frameworks, JUnit, JMeter, Rest Assureed, Serenity;

In depth knowledge of Maven/Gradle/MsBuild;

Design & Implementation of Jenkins Pipelines;

Artefact Management and Release Management;

SQL Server;

Java 1.8+;


Good knowledge of Networking Protocols;

Systems Integration Experience across multiple vendor platforms;

A good Working knowledge of at least one API Gateway;

Microservices Development, preferably using Spring Boot;

Have designed & delivered solutions in at least one of Amazon/Azure/Google Cloud;

Atlassian Toolset;

Static Analysis & Reporting;

Has experience of working in a highly automated environment with a focus on quality.
