Main responsibilities

Your main day to day responsibilities will be:

  • Developing bespoke applications as part of a multi-functional team, working closely with team members
  • Producing clean and efficient code based on specifications
  • Defining and agreeing specifications based on user stories and non-functional requirements
  • Testing and deploying applications and systems
  • Troubleshoot, debug and fix existing applications
  • Design and implement improvements and upgrades to existing applications
  • Create technical documentation for reference and to support knowledge sharing

Other day to day activities

All our engineers will be expected to embody an open and positive approach, supporting the Home Office in:

  • progressing the internal profession, understanding all roles and helping to build our community
  • working and assessing to appropriate standards: for instance, accessibility, the GDS service standard and our own community practices
  • improving our skills and approaches as well as keeping up to speed with the technology landscape

Skills and experience

Essential Skills

You'll have a demonstrable passion for Software development with the following skills or, proven experience in:

  • React, Node.js and associated ecosystem
  • Working in Agile development teams (Scrum and Kanban)
  • Familiarity with software design and development in a test-driven environment (TDD)
  • Proficiency in building efficient microservices using Docker, Kubernetes and Webpack
  • Proficiency in using Git and several branching strategies
  • Comfortable interfacing with databases and using SQL and Object-Relational
  • Mapping (ORM) frameworks (eg Sequelize)
  • Enthusiasm to learn new languages and technologies

Desirable Skills

Ideally you will also have the following skills or experience in:

  • business and technical analysis
  • open source workflow engines, ideally Camunda
  • the Border Force business domain
