Consultant - Tech and Data Science Expert

(UK-based, location flexible/remote)

Contract: up to 6 months, 3 days per week.
£550-£650 per day (depending on experience).

Deadline for applications is 27 August at 12 noon.

Unseen is working towards a world without slavery. We provide safe houses and support in the community for survivors of trafficking and modern slavery. We also run the Modern Slavery & Exploitation Helpline and work with individuals, communities, business, governments, other charities and statutory agencies to stamp out slavery for good.

We are looking to employ a consultant lead with 3+ years of experience of Python and SQL developing solutions for live production environments. The role will entail working 3 days per week for up to 6 months, to support Unseen in developing our technical capability to maximise usage of sensitive data through our national Helpline.

The successful candidate will join a team of experts in modern slavery and human trafficking on a new project as the technical and data science lead. The role will require conducting analysis of structured and unstructured case data in a secure data environment to develop new statistical and machine learning solutions that enable Unseen and its partners to detect new patterns, correlations and relationships between records. The role will require the ability to develop innovative data science solutions as well as making them accessible to business users in an intuitive way.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop technical solutions for an organisation committed to supporting vulnerable individuals and ensuring data, to prevent harm, is maximised. The post will report to the Executive Director during the period of tenure. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively across the organisation and with our team of external technical experts.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Applying data science skills to find key insights in data that will support the core activity of assisting victims of modern slavery and exploitation.
  • Using and promoting the analysis of structured and unstructured data to discover new or previously unasked questions.
  • Understanding and translating business and policy questions into analytics projects.
  • Streamlining and automate the process of producing periodic statistical reports.
  • Using data to develop hypotheses for product and service improvement.
  • Prototype new approaches and develop new algorithms using NLP and ML techniques.
  • Learning new techniques as needed from textbooks and research papers.
  • Collaborate with external experts and participate in the UK data science community.

We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible (subject to satisfactory references and completion of relevant induction process). Successful applicants will be required to undertake a DBS check.

Please refer to the person specification for more details.

Deadline for applications is 27 August at 12 noon.

Successful applicants will be invited to a technical and executive interview in early/mid September.

Unseen is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications from all sections of the community we serve and recognise the value that diversity adds to our work and organisation. We encourage applications from BAME, disabled and LGBT people that are under-represented in our workforce, as well as people with lived experience of slavery and human trafficking.
