£580/day

An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen in Air Quality Impacts team at the Met Office to be involved with the software development of the Clean Air Framework. The Clean Air Framework will be a national resource providing an on-line environment containing a range of tools and resources for air quality practitioners and health impacts work. The work will involve developing software infrastructure and tools to interact with cloud managed datasets. The infrastructure consists of server-side Python code with an Angular/ Javascript front end, connecting to a Jasmin cloud for data storage.

This role offers the opportunity to engage in both server-side and client-side development. Work will be in an Agile environment and will also give exposure to Pangeos & the Jasmin cloud.

The Clean Air programme is a £42.5M integrated programme of air quality research & innovation, which aims to bring together the UK's world class air quality research capabilities, including across the health, atmospheric and behavioural/social sciences to address, and support high quality multi- and interdisciplinary research and innovation to develop practical solutions to today's air quality issues and equip the UK to proactively tackle future air quality issues, in order to protect health and support clean growth.

Job Responsibilities
To code specified requirements for the Clean Air Framework (both server and client side)
To contribute to ongoing design process (user cases, requirements gathering, DOM design)
To engage with Agile development, including scrum, planning and review meetings
To contribute to the build & maintenance of the pangeo environment
To assist with software & dataset release/ implementation within Jasmin cloud.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
Excellent technical skills, in particular a good knowledge of Python, JavaScript and the Angular framework.
Implementation knowledge - for example configuring virtual machines, docker, and kubernetes
Experience of leading and/or supporting significant software developments
Evidence of excellent (written, oral, presentation and listening) communication skills, with an ability to communicate complex technical matters effectively in a relevant way to different audiences.
Independent and self-directed nature, able to take the initiative without close supervision

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
Some of the following are desirable
Use of Django web development framework
Experience of working in an Agile environment
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders or collaborators
Experience in use of Mongo Database

Candidates should also note that once Covid measures ease, there is an expectation that the candidate will attend the Met Office HQ in Exeter 2 days per week
