Capita are working with SITA, the world’s leading specialist in air transport communications and information technology, to find an experienced Director of Software Engineering to join them on a 3 month contract.
As the Director of Software Engineering for Passenger at Airports you will head up SITA’s approach to developing products in the Passenger at Airports portfolio.
The primary mission is to lead all aspects of Product Engineering within our DevOps team in close partnership with peers from Product Management and Services to deliver product and portfolio solutions to SITA customers.
Using established PEI processes, methodologies and technologies, this role will own the design, development, and implementation of the portfolio’s software products and systems. Furthermore, it will contribute to shaping the strategy to achieve revenue and proﬁt growth within the Passenger at Airports Portfolio. In support of this, the role will be fully accountable for the portfolio’s PEI budget including creation, tracking, and forecasting. The successful candidate will lead a portfolio development team that is expected to contribute to double-digit percentage growth on an annual basis.
The position reports to the VP of Product Engineering and Integration and is based in Aldershot.
With a broad portfolio scope which includes SmartPath, Business Intelligence, Self-Service (e-Gates, kiosks, and Self-BagDrop), FLEX, Common Use Terminal Equipment as well as End-User Computing, this is a role that provides ample opportunity for professional growth and development.
Critical initiatives include evolving SmartPath development, Passenger Processing / Self Service portfolio transformation, and helping to position SITA as a key Passenger ID player in the market.
The technology span of this role exceeds that of simple application development, in that this role requires the application platform, the apps themselves, the infrastructure, the network and security to be considered and evolved holistically.
The successful candidate will lead, motivate, develop, inspire and engender trust with their leadership team with overall responsibility and accountability for product engineering resources including permanent, contractors and 3rd party and which includes the roles you would expect to find in full-practice Scrum Teams, including Scrum Masters, Software Engineers, Test Automation Engineers, Solutions Architects, UX Designers, Technical Writers
The successful candidate:
Develops and secures buy-in and owns the interlocked budget
Builds and maintains systems and components as required by product strategies and technology roadmaps.
Uses appropriate design, development, test & assurance, and release/deployment processes, methodologies and technologies
Welcomes constant change; including new requirements, evolving business goals and strategies, and emerging technologies.
Success in the role requires the ability to collaborate, communicate and integrate across the different functions of the Portfolio DevOps team.
Engages with Product and Services Leads ensuring that agreement is obtained as to how deliverables meet product roadmap requirements and backlogs.
Works with internal stakeholders to ensure technology/application components/microservices etc. can be assembled to deliver against requirements.
Maintains overall accountability for a portfolio of medium to large scale development, implementation and maintenance projects that have a significant cross-functional business impact.
Holds full accountability for the design, development, test, build, release and deployment activities and general engineering hygiene within the portfolio.
Ensures software application components/microservices are developed, tested, implemented and supported to sustain the long-term goals of the business.
Engages with practice teams to drive innovation and identify re-usable components and architectural patterns to be planned into architecture roadmaps for delivery by Portfolio Software Development Teams.
Ensures projects are completed per commitments, on time, within budget and in compliance with all relevant SITA architectural, quality and security standards.
Contributes to the development and maintenance of Software Development processes.
Other responsibilities include prototyping, implementing/updating solutions, building and executing test plans in accordance with SITA quality standards, participating in quality reviews, supporting operations, and triaging and fixing operational issues. Who you are:
A pragmatist, able to balance conceptual thinking with a desire to roll your sleeves up and contribute to meeting the delivery priorities of the Product Portfolio.
Demonstrable core engineering competencies, with strong knowledge of standard engineering principles, theories, concepts, techniques and practical awareness of other architectures as well as development methodologies.
Has worked in distributed international teams in an Agile/Scrum development environment.
Strong understanding of DevOps, with SAFE knowledge being desirable
Experienced at effectively working with technical and non-technical people at all levels and facilitating communication and collaboration.
Must be able to demonstrate strong experience in the management of a team of professionals, to deliver high value, cost-effective and strategic customer propositions.
Practical experience of managing a complex project or bid budgets, particularly geared around managing and measuring the cost of delivery
