Description of Job This is a full-time position assigned to Facilities Services at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB). The Facilities Services work unit exists to provide installation, fabrication, maintenance and support of all buildings and grounds of CSDB, located in Colorado Springs, CO, and any associated equipment or systems. The purpose of the work unit is also to ensure the safety of all students and staff at CSDB who may utilize such systems. The Custodian II is a work leader to five (5) Custodian I positions, and exists to provide a clean and safe environment for staff and students by maintaining cleanliness in CSDB building interiors and furnishings. This is done by mopping and waxing floors, washing walls and furniture and disinfecting bathrooms by following appropriate sanitary standards, and using appropriate equipment and cleaning materials. This position also exists to support staff by setting up tables, chairs, overhead screens and other equipment for special staff training classes and in-services.
Duties include but are not limited to: General Cleaning / Custodial Work. Following sanitary standards, maintain building and furnishings by cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, sweeping, vacuuming and mopping floors and stairways, emptying trash receptacles. Spot cleaning walls, doors, windows, and flooring as time permits. Other related duties as assigned. Summer and School Break Cleaning. Strip and wax hard flooring surfaces, shampoo carpeted flooring and upholstery, wash walls, lights, and furniture, re-finish wood floorings (this duty is primarily exercised in summer cleaning but could be scheduled during the school year if appropriate). Event Set-up / Moving Furniture. Moving furniture and performing special setups including setting up chairs, tables, audio and video equipment, temporary stages for events, meetings and in-services, etc. Responsible to ensure event set-up is completed with accuracy, and in a timely manner. Work Leader Responsibilities. Perform tasks associated with lead custodian established by supervisor such as, assigning daily tasks, monitoring progress and workflow, checking work product, scheduling work, monitoring leave time, training, and help to continually maintain work standards. Snow Removal and Safety. Remove snow and ice by exterior entrances as needed, and other areas as directed. Remove snow on campus by using snow removal equipment including truck with blade, gator with blade, snow blowers, walk-behind brushes, tractor-mounted brushes, snow shovels, etc. Apply salt and/or sand on walkways and parking areas in order to keep students and staff safe. Safety and Security. Check buildings, doors and windows, close and lock as necessary to ensure safety. Change incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs as needed and directed. Check e-mail, service requests, and master calendar each work day for any setups, instructions or special assignments. Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications One (1) year of custodial experience in an occupational field related to the work assignment; i.e., custodial experience in a school / residential / hospital / institutional setting. NOTE: One (1) full year of experience is equivalent to 2080 hours. All experience must be described in detail on the (on-line) application to receive credit. Conditions of Employment Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force. This position requires heavy lifting (following appropriate safety requirements). Custodian positions at CSDB are designated as "essential services" positions, and the persons selected for these positions are required to be on duty to perform essential and/or emergency services of the State / school without delay or interruption to ensure health, safety, and welfare, regardless of inclement weather conditions.
Shift Work required: afternoon or evening shift work (based upon agency need); eligible for shift differential. This Custodian II position at CSDB is non-exempt, and the employee selected is eligible to receive overtime pay, with a condition of employment that overtime work must be appropriately authorized in advance and may be paid in compensatory time in lieu of cash payment. Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Survival (1+) skill level, or applicants must be willing and able to attain proficiency at the level required within a specified period of time, as demonstrated by an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy/procedures. Selected applicant(s) will be required to submit to and pass a background check, to include Colorado and Federal criminal history checks, employment verification, and professional/personal reference checks. Additional Requirements Knowledge of and ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position; ability to effectively utilize a variety of computer software applications, which may include but is not limited to e-mail, Internet, word processing, electronic calendar, presentation development, spreadsheet, database, etc.; willingness to stay current and develop skills as needed with or without direct support from CSDB. Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback; ability to participate effectively in a team setting and to work independently; strong interpersonal and communication skills; effective organizational skills; effective problem-solving skills. A courteous, professional and helpful attitude in the role of CSDB representative.
