Optical Scientist/Engineer - Initially Remote, then Cambridge

£47,000 plus benefits/Initially Remote, then Cambridge

A global leading cutting edge technology business require an experienced Optical Scientist/Engineer ideally with a PhD in optics, experimental quantum physics or related discipline (electrical engineering, nanoscience's, etc) or degree plus equivalent professional. They seek an exceptional experimental scientist or engineer to join their technical team developing advanced optical technologies for the cloud.

As the Optical Scientist/Engineer, you will have 3-5 years' experience working in an optical laboratory environment and be skilled in and bring a strong background in several of the following areas (experimental):

  • High average power lasers.
  • Ultrafast lasers/optics.
  • Laser material processing.
  • Quantum optics.
  • Cryogenic experiments.
  • Microwave setups and measurements, magnetometry.
  • Spatial light modulators.
  • High resolution optical microscopy.
  • Nanomechanical systems.

In addition, the Optical Scientist/Engineer must possess the following skills:



  • Instrument control (in Python), data analysis and acquisition.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision towards defined task milestones within a team environment.
  • Strong understanding of quantum phenomena in materials in nanoscale.
  • Good organizational skills, capable of managing multiple simultaneous tasks effectively.
  • Besides their qualifications for experimental research, candidates should in general provide a high degree of independence, a genuine interest in exploring new physics and technologies, and a general motivation to perform work in a highly collaborative spirit.

Typical Day in the Role of the Optical Scientist/Engineer will involve the design, construction, modification or testing of free-space optical experiments.

The successful candidate will join a world leading team of optical, electronic, mechanical and software engineers developing solutions to the most challenging and important technological problems.

Candidate Requirements for the Optical Scientist/Engineer position:



  • The successful candidate should have a PhD in optics, experimental quantum physics or related discipline (electrical engineering, nanoscience's, etc ) or degree plus equivalent professional experience.
  • The candidate must have 3-5 years' experience working in an optical laboratory environment. Ideally, their research record should be demonstrated by strong publications in Journals and top conferences.
